FORT WORTH – With emotions running high on senior day, No. 20 TCU held off a late comeback attempt by Texas Tech, winning a five-set thriller.
The Horned Frogs (19-9, 9-7 Big 12) dug deep to fend off an upset bid by the Red Raiders. After taking the first two sets, Texas Tech responded to even the match and force a winner-take-all fifth set. With their backs against the wall, TCU overcame a four-point deficit to win the match in the final set, 15-12.
All five of the Frogs' seniors earned a start, but it was sophomore Evan Hendrix who shined for TCU, posting a career-high 33 kills. The Scottsdale, Arizona, native was lights out, taking over 70 swings and hitting at a .371 clip. Defensively, TCU registered 15 blocks as a team, led by senior captain Sarah Sylvester, who finished with eight.
Despite Texas Tech scoring the first four points of the match, TCU responded with an 8-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. The Frogs remained in control, but after set point was overturned by a challenge, the Red Raiders tied the match back up at 24 on an ace. Hendrix, however, quickly put away back-to-back kills to secure a 27-25 set victory in extra points.
In the second, both teams battled for control early on. A kill from Emily Van Groningen helped spark an 8-2 stretch for TCU that put the Frogs in front 15-12 at the media timeout. From there, they charged on, and Hendrix once again capped off a 25-22 set win.
With a two sets to none lead, TCU looked to close out the match, but Texas Tech had other plans. The Red Raiders won the third set 25-19 and used a late 5-1 run to win the fourth set 25-21.
Heading to a fifth set, momentum shifted in Texas Tech's direction. Two early aces helped the Red Raiders go up 8-4 as the two teams switched sides. Out of the break, TCU fought its way back into the match using massive blocks from Alexis Roberson, Lauren Murphy, Becca Kelley, Ella Foti and Sylvester as well as six kills from Hendrix to claw back and win the match in a five-set thriller.
No. 20 TCU hosts No. 23 Baylor on Wednesday, Nov. 25, in its final home match of the regular season. First serve is set for 2 p.m. CT.
