Volleyball Sweeps UNLV to Close Out Players Era Showcase

LAS VEGAS – Playing in the finale of the Players Era Volleyball Showcase, No. 18 TCU swept UNLV 3-0 to pick up its first win of the season Sunday evening inside T-Mobile Arena.

The Horned Frogs (1-1) closed out the weekend with a strong victory over UNLV (0-2) in straight sets, including a 33-31 third set. Rosemary Archer and Reese Wilburn helped the offense hit at a .264 clip, dishing out kills to eight different attackers. Evan Hendrix paced the team with 13 kills and added 11 digs for her first double-double of the year. Jalyn Gibson and Becca Kelley each followed with eight kills, but what was even more impressive was that Gibson did so with zero errors (18 total attempts).

For the second straight day, transfer Reese Robins came off the bench to give the Frogs extra firepower. The 6-5 senior was extremely efficient, recording seven kills on 11 swings.

The defense once again looked sharp. Alice Volpe tallied 14 digs, and freshman middle blocker Kinsley Young led the way with five blocks.

TCU got going quickly in the first set as back-to-back kills from Robins sparked a 4-0 run. The Frogs watched their lead grow to as many as nine at 15-6 by the media timeout. UNLV tried to cut into it, but the offense continued to roll behind Robins, Hendrix and Young. In control, Gibson put down the final kill to hand TCU a 25-17 set win.

Hendrix powered the Frogs early in the second, scoring four of the first seven points. An early five-point lead continued to grow after a Volpe ace. The TCU attack was just too strong for UNLV as Archer had her way, picking apart the Rebels' defense with her hitters. Up by eight at 20-12, the Frogs inched closer to victory. Freshman Morgan Holloman crushed her first collegiate kill to give TCU set point, and Gibson capped it off with a kill to end the second, 25-16.

After dominating the first two sets, the Frogs played a much closer third set that featured 20 ties and 11 lead changes. Through the first 15 points, it was neck-and-neck until Gibson, Kelley and Robins finished off a 5-0 run to help TCU be the first to 20. UNLV came back and erased the deficit and earned set point, but the Frogs fended it off to send the match into extra points. The Rebels had three opportunities to win the match, and TCU had six before back-to-back Kelley kills and a Young block sealed the 33-31 victory.

The Frogs are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at home, taking on No. 11 SMU at 6:30 p.m. CT inside Schollmaier Arena.
