FORT WORTH, Texas - Jackie Torda netted two second half goals as TCU downed Texas Woman's University 4-0 on Sunday at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium."It was a good match today for us to be able to get a little bit of rhythm going into conference," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "I thought the girls played sharp and did a much better job of changing the point of attack today. We also did a better job with our decisions and were fairly organized, which is good."
Torda, a junior from Colleyville, found the back of the net in the 60th minute of the match, scoring off a cross from Nikki Wilbur. On the play, Wilbur pushed a ball over to the left side of the box to a running Torda who punched it in past TWU goalkeeper Nori Morgan.
In the 76th minute, Torda scored the final goal of the game, blasting a shot into the back of the net from the right side of the box off a corner kick by senior Michelle Nguyen.
"It was good to come out and finish up the non-conference portion of our schedule with two wins this weekend," said Torda. "I am just happy that I was able to score and help the team win today."
TCU dominated the contest on Sunday afternoon, outshooting the Pioneers, 28-4, including 16-1 in the second half. The Frogs had a standout day defensively, holding TWU to no corner kicks and only four shot attempts in the shutout victory. Overall, TCU did not allow Texas Woman's to record a shot attempt until the 30:29 mark of the first half. In the second half, the Pioneers lone shot attempt came at the 49:48 mark and it was blocked by the Horned Frogs.
Defender Alex Mechalske put TCU on the board in the 8th minute of the match, blasting a ball from about 20 yards out over the outstretched arms of Morgan.
Jordan Calhoun and Lizzy Karoly continued to pressure the Pioneers moments later, but couldn't find the back of the net as both shots were saved by TWU. In the 14th minute of the contest, Karoly gave the Purple and White an early 2-0 lead, scoring off a deflection inside the box.
Halfway through the half, Karoly, a senior from California, appeared to have increased the Frog lead, but she was called for offsides on the play to keep the score at 2-0.
Right before the break, Calhoun and Torda both fired shots towards the goal, but couldn't split the posts.
TCU continued its relentless pressure in the second half as Chelsea Cody and Kaylie Garcia both missed wide of the goal early in the half. In the 57th minute, Cody tried to push the TCU lead to 3-0 off a pass from Kristen Halverson, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Following Torda's goal in the 60th minute, TCU then proceeded to fire eight shot attempts towards the Pioneer goal, but couldn't crack the scoring column. During that stretch, sophomore Katie Runyon missed on two shot attempts, including one late in the half off a cross from Torda.
Torda put the finishing touches on a dominating offensive display by TCU on Sunday afternoon, scoring her second goal of the contest and 16th of her career at the 75:06 mark of the second half.
"Jackie Torda was a rock star today. I am so happy for her that she was able to score two goals and help us get the win heading into conference play," said Calhoun.
The Purple and White, who played a total of 22 players on Sunday, held a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks, including an 8-0 advantage in the second half. Calhoun led the offensive attack with six shot attempts, while Torda posted four shots and two goals at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium Sunday.
Kira Michelson-Bartlett, who faced little or no pressure from TWU, saved one shot, while Morgan posted five saves.
With the victory, the Horned Frogs moved to 7-4-0 on the season, while Texas Woman's dropped to 2-5-0.
TCU will open its conference season next Saturday at New Mexico. Start time for the match is set for 5 p.m. MT.
