TCU picks up first Big 12 win
SALT LAKE CITY – The TCU women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Utah on Thursday night at Ute Field.
In a battle that lasted a full 90 minutes, the Horned Frogs (4-3-1, 1-1 Big 12) continuously fought and were able to hold onto a 1-0 lead that was obtained in the first half off an Eres Freifeld goal and earn their first Big 12 win this season.
THE RUNDOWN
From the start of the match, TCU proved itself as the more energetic side with a high-effort defensive press that gave Utah numerous difficulties throughout the opening 45 minutes and would eventually open up the scoring.
The offensive pressure would persist throughout the first 45 minutes, with TCU putting up seven shots to Utah's three. An early chance for the Utes in the 20th minute was erased by Peyton Nourse as she saved a ball hit right on goal with her body to keep the scoring level at 0-0.
In the 32nd minute, TCU's defensive pressure would finally pay off, as a Ute miscue caused their goalkeeper and defender to collide and fall down, leaving Freifeld wide open with nothing but green grass in front of her. The sophomore took a few dribbles then fired the ball into the net to give TCU a 1-0 lead that the team would hold onto heading into the locker room.
Despite numerous chances such as a Hannah Harms left-footed shot in the 70th minute that went off the woodwork, the Frogs were unable to scratch off another goal throughout the second half. Even with barely getting outshot in the second half of action 5-4, TCU would never break and put together a strong team defensive performance to hold onto the lead and secure the victory.
Geller held things down in goal tonight, recording four clutch saves and playing all 90 minutes behind goal.
