Horned Frogs ride stingy defense and 17-6 fourth quarter run past Cowgirls
FORT WORTH – Faced with adversity after suffering its first loss of the season, No. 13 TCU offered a reminder why it will factor prominently in the race for the Big 12 title.
The Horned Frogs held Oklahoma State to its lowest scoring output of the season and rode a 17-6 fourth quarter run to a 69-61 victory over the Cowgirls on Wednesday at Schollmaier Arena.
TCU extended its unbeaten run at home to 35 games – the second-longest streak in Division I. The Horned Frogs improved to 15-1 overall and 3-1 in league play ahead of a 4 p.m. home tilt on Sunday vs. Arizona State.
The victory helped offset an overtime loss at Utah on Saturday and avenged a 60-59 defeat at Oklahoma State on Jan. 22, 2025, in a game the Horned Frogs squandered a 15-point halftime lead.
TCU topped the scoreboard for nearly 38 minutes of the contest, but Oklahoma State (13-3, 2-2 Big 12) snuck in front, 51-50, via a three-point play from Stailee Heard with 6:59 remaining.
The Cowgirls lead lasted all of 14 seconds. TCU counterpunched with a 7-0 run capped off by a 3-pointer by Maddie Scherr from the left key over the ensuing 1:20. The spurt ignited the Frogs' decisive scoring surge. TCU scored on six of its final seven possessions and twice led by 10 points with less than one minute remaining off fast break layups from Donovyn Hunter.
The game pitted two of the nation's most efficient offenses opposite one another but morphed into a physical affair that has come to define the Horned Frogs and Cowgirls' recent head-to-heads. Neither team has topped 70 points in any of the four meetings between the programs in the last three seasons.
The Cowgirls entered as the nation's leader in total 3-pointers (172) and averaging 11 makes from distance per night. TCU pestered Oklahoma State into a season-worst 4-22 clip (18 percent) from behind the arc allowed just eight assists, the Cowgirls' fewest in a game all year.
TCU's 69 points were a season-low, but the Horned Frogs continually created quality looks to control the game. The Horned Frogs shot 52 percent from the floor and 9-18 from distance. TCU assisted on 20 of its 26 field goals.
Seven of TCU's assists came in the fourth quarter, including three apiece from Hunter and Olivia Miles.
Miles paced the Frogs with 20 points, eight assists and six rebounds.
Clara Silva controlled the paint with a 12-point, seven-rebound and three-block performance.
Hunter assisted on a pair of cutting layups for Silva in the fourth, the latter of which inched TCU further ahead 61-54.
Marta Suarez gave TCU three double digit scorers as she sprinkled in 11 points. The Spaniard effectively iced the game with a pair of free throws that increased TCU's lead to 65-57 with 1:06 remaining.
TCU drilled five 3-pointers in the first quarter to go in front 19-16. Taylor Bigby was responsible for two. The 6-1 senior guard ultimately finished with nine points.
The Horned Frogs never led by more than five points in the first half and took a 33-28 lead into the intermission.
Back-to-back deep balls from Bigby and Miles staked TCU to a 43-35 edge midway through the third and seemingly created TCU's first bit of separation.
The Cowgirls proved difficult to put away. Oklahoma State rattled of an 8-0 run to tie the ballgame late in the third. The Cowgirls scored on their first possession in the final frame to get within a point of TCU down 47-46. Scherr promptly responded with her first of two 3-pointers in the fourth.
Heard and Jadyn Wooten were responsible for 48 of the Cowgirls' points. Wooten led all scorers with 25 points while Heard had 23.
Scherr paired six rebounds with her half-dozen fourth quarter points.
Hunter finished with seven points and five assists.
