FORT WORTH – Coined by the late Jim Valvano, 'survive and advance' has morphed into the motto of March Madness, and it's precisely what the Horned Frogs did on Sunday at Schollmaier Arena.
No. 3 seed TCU clawed its way out of a 10-point first half deficit to send its second round tilt vs. sixth-seeded Washington to overtime. Tied at 51-51, the Horned Frogs quickly ensured they would not be on the wrong end of an opening weekend upset, scoring the first seven points in the extra period en route to a 62-59 victory.
The comeback effort staked TCU to is second straight Sweet 16 appearance. TCU (31-5) will play either No. 2 seed Iowa or No. 10 seed Virginia on Saturday at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California.
Olivia Miles led all players with 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. She shot 6-10 from the field and scored 12 points out of the intermission. Miles steadied a Horned Frogs offense that was limited to a season-low 19 points in the first half and trailed by eight at the break.
Clara Silva finished with 16 points and eight rebounds and delivered the go-ahead layup on the first possession in overtime.
A 3-pointer from Taylor Bigby, who contributed 15 points, off a dime from Miles followed on TCU's subsequent trip down the court. Miles then curled a right-handed layup through the net to give the Frogs their first multi-possession lead since a 13-7 advantage at the 2:00 mark of the opening frame.
Washington (22-11) whittled TCU's lead down to a single point as the clock trickled under two minutes, but transition layups from Donovyn Hunter and Bigby gave the Frogs a five-point cushion, 62-57, with less than a minute remaining. A 3-pointer to tie from the Huskies' Saniya Sellers clanged off the back iron as time expired.
TCU extended its NCAA-leading home winning streak to 44 games and ran the table inside Schollmaier Arena for the third time in program history with the result. The Horned Frogs also became the first Big 12 team to reach the second weekend of the Big Dance in consecutive seasons since Baylor in 2022. Colorado achieved the feat during the 2023-24 campaign but was a member of the Pac-12.
The victory appeared in jeopardy for the bulk of regulation. TCU was held to six points in the second quarter and missed 14 of its last 16 shots before the break. Washington bridged a 20-2 run between the first and second quarters and Huskies topped the scoreboard for more than 24 minutes of the ballgame.
TCU cut the deficit down to a single basket at 39-36 entering the final period, only or Washington to work ahead to a 47-40 edge with 6:19 to play.
With their season on the line, the Horned Frogs caught fire with an 11-2 run and took their first lead since the start of the second quarter.
Silva delivered game-tying and go-ahead buckets. The 6-7 sophomore netted seven points in the fourth quarter. She capped a string of seven unanswered points for TCU with 3:36 left in regulation and muscled home a contested layup two minutes later to make it 51-49 in favor of the Frogs. Miles had the assist on both buckets.
After drilling 13 threes in their first round victory over UC San Diego on Friday, the Horned Frogs sunk just four vs. the Huskies. Bigby accounted for three of the deep balls. TCU, which entered the contest averaging 78 points per game, managed just seven field goals in the first half.
The second half was more akin to the Frogs' offensive standards. TCU connected at a 56 percent clip from the field (14-25) and racked up 26 points inside the arc.
The Horned Frogs outscored the Huskies 42-18 in the paint.
TCU's length bothered a guard-heavy Washington rotation. The Horned Frogs held the Huskies to their second-lowest shooting percentage of the season (35 percent) and allowed only 14 makes inside the arc.
Sellers led the Huskies with 18 points and was one of four Washington starters to score in double figures.
