Frogs win their third straight match against a ranked opponent
FORT WORTH – Lauren Murphy's career night helped No. 24 TCU volleyball power past No. 19 UCLA for the second night in a row on Saturday. The Horned Frogs completed a 2-0 weekend at home with a four-set victory over the Bruins.
It marked the third straight win over a ranked opponent for TCU (3-1, 0-0 Big 12), already tying the single-season record through just four matches. Dating back to last season, head coach Jason Williams and the Frogs have won 10 consecutive matches on their home court in Schollmaier Arena.
Murphy was one of three Frogs to finish with double-digit kills in the victory. The junior led the team with a career-high 16 kills on a .500 hitting efficiency and added an ace at the service line. Her teammates Evan Hendrix and Becca Kelley each finished with 13 kills. Freshman Samara Coleman also had a career night, tallying eight kills in her second collegiate start.
Setters Rosemary Archer and Ella Foti guided the offense to a strong .278 mark against the Bruins' stingy defense. They combined for 53 assists and a pair of aces. Defensively, libero Alice Volpe was flying around the court en route to a career-best 22 digs, and Kelley led the Frogs with four blocks as TCU held UCLA to a .138 hitting percentage.
Frog fans were getting déjà vu as TCU won the first two sets of the match. UCLA kept things relatively close through the first 20 points of set one, but a late 4-0 run that featured two kills and a block by Kelley proved to be the difference as the Frogs won 25-21.
TCU scored the first three points of set two and never looked back, winning 25-19. The Frogs never trailed in the second as they hit .375 as a team, led by Murphy with six kills.
However, the Bruins showed fight in the third set. UCLA led by as many as four and stalled the Frogs' comeback attempts, forcing a fourth set with a 25-21 victory.
The Frogs put their foot down in the fourth, not letting the Bruins take any momentum. TCU stormed out to a 10-5 lead and put aside any doubt of who was going to win the set. Hendrix caught fire, putting away five kills, and Kelley and Sarah Sylvester put the exclamation point on the victory with two massive stuff blocks as the Frogs ended the night with a dominant 25-14 set victory.
TCU is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 10, hosting No. 10 Texas A&M in Schollmaier Arena in a battle for Lone Star State supremacy. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on FS1.
