Horned Frogs suffer defeat in penalty kicks against Cougars
FORT WORTH – TCU, the fifth-ranked team nationally and top-seeded team in the Big 12 Tournament, fell to No. 8 seed BYU in penalty kicks on Monday afternoon at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium at Jane Justin Field.
THE RUNDOWN
TCU (15-2-2, 9-1-1 Big 12) and BYU saw a back-and-forth battle in the first half of play. Both teams totaled four shots apiece with momentum shifts throughout. The Cougars secured a goal in the 27th minute off a shot outside the box, and TCU was unable to earn the equalizer as both teams headed into the locker rooms.
The second half of action saw a script completely flipped on the offensive side of the ball for TCU. In the 47th minute, Cameron Patton crossed a ball into the box that touched the hand of the Cougar defender and would lead to a penalty kick after video review. Sydney Becerra would convert on the chance and tie the match up at 1-1.
A few minutes later in the 51st minute, BYU was able to take the advantage off a free kick goal that was scored from outside of the box. However, TCU would find another answer and even the match up when in the 70th minute Grace Coppinger fed a ball to Becerra who found AJ Hennessey wide open in the middle of the box and put the back of the net to even
In the final 45 minutes, the Frogs posted a 15-4 shot advantage and looked much more like their usual selves as opposed to the first frame.
As postseason rules dictate, the match went into overtime. However, throughout the two 10-minute periods, neither team was able to score a goal to clinch the match. TCU posted a 4-1 shot advantage during the 20 minutes of action but was unable to put one in the back of the net as the teams headed to penalty kicks.
BYU was able to win the penalty kick shootout, 4-3, to advance to the next round of the Big 12 Tournament.
Olivia Geller played all 110 minutes and in the penalty shootout, totaling three saves.
QUOTE OF THE GAME
On how the team turned things around in the second half and took the game to overtime…
"First half, I thought we tried to rush things a little bit. We had control of the game for bits and pieces of it, but not enough for me. In the second half, I thought we did really well, created some good chances and cleared it off the line a couple of times. Sometimes, that's how soccer goes."
GAME NOTABLES
TCU will await its NCAA Tournament seeding, as the full bracket is set to be revealed on Monday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m.
