Melanie Parra breaks school record with 23 kills in three sets
FORT WORTH – Playing at home for the first time this season, No. 25 TCU volleyball kicked off the Fight in the Fort with a pair of sweeps, downing Texas A&M Commerce and Prairie View A&M in straight sets on Friday inside Schollmaier Arena.
Melanie Parra showed why she was named AVCA National Player of the Week and back-to-back Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, lighting up the scoreboard against Texas A&M Commerce. The senior from Sinaloa, Mexico, broke the TCU school record for kills in a three-set match, racking up 23 on a blistering .444 clip to best Amy Atamanczuk's nearly 24-year-old record (22 at Stephen F. Austin, 9/19/00).
The Horned Frogs (4-2, 0-0 Big 12) improved to 19-11 at home under head coach Jason Williams and 18-2 in their last 20 home openers.
MATCH ONE | TCU 3, Texas A&M Commerce 0
The Horned Frogs broke out the brooms in their first match at the Fight in the Fort, sweeping Texas A&M Commerce 3-0 behind Parra's program record day.
TCU hit a season-high .314 as a team as setter Lily Nicholson fed the offense with 43 assists. Jalyn Gibson slammed home the first kill of the season in Schollmaier to open the match. The junior finished with 12 on the afternoon and added eight digs. Freshman Bryn Shankle also checked into the match in the third set, tallying her first collegiate block.
Texas A&M Commerce held its own early with TCU. Tied at 13, Parra sparked a 4-0 run through the media timeout. With a four-point lead at 19-15, Riley Weigelt went to the line and served the Frogs out with six straight points to take set one, 25-15.
Things were once again competitive in the second. The Frogs worked from behind, staying within one point of the Lions until the final five points. After tying the score seven times, TCU broke through at 21-21, utilizing kills from Parra and Nicholson to go on a 5-0 run capped off by a set-winning block from Sylvester and Becca Kelley.
TCU finished things off in set three, with Parra chasing history. The senior hit .500 with eight kills, giving her 23 total on the afternoon. Parra scored five of the Frogs' final six points to etch her name into the record books once again.
MATCH TWO | TCU 3, Prairie View A&M 0
In the nightcap, the Frogs rolled to a 2-0 start at home with a sweep of Prairie View A&M behind a balanced offensive attack.
Parra followed up her school record with a 17-kill outing against the Lions to finish her day with 40, good for 6.67 per set. Jalyn Gibson notched double digits, extending her streak to four straight games with at least 10. The junior tallied 11 kills on just 21 swings. Becca Kelley rounded it out with an extremely efficient night. She picked up seven kills on eight attempts for a blistering .875 hitting percentage.
TCU overcame a sluggish start in the opening set against Prairie View A&M after falling behind five points. The Frogs kept their composure on the court, responding with a 7-2 run of their own to tie things up at seven. From that point, they never trailed the rest of the match, building up an eight-point lead to grab set one 25-17.
It was all TCU to open up the second set. Parra kickstarted an 11-1 run to give the Frogs an early lead with no signs of slowing down, and they cruised to a lopsided 25-11 set victory.
Once again, a hot start handed TCU an early lead in the third set. The Frogs quickly found themselves up 12-3 over Prairie View A&M, but the Lions clawed all the way back within three at 16-13. The Frogs locked in with a 4-0 featuring kills from Parra and Alexis Roberson and a 5-0 run to complete the sweep.
The Frogs wrap up the Fight in the Fort on Friday, Sept. 13, with its first-ever meeting with UCLA. First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m. in Schollmaier Arena.
