Dennison becomes 2nd Horned Frog to reach 1,400 digs in road defeat
AMES, Iowa – TCU Volleyball (6-6, 0-2) dropped a thrilling five-set match (10-25, 25-22, 27-25, 22-25, 4-15) to Iowa State (10-3, 2-0) on Saturday afternoon inside Hilton Coliseum. Dani Dennison made her first start of the season at libero and delivered 17 digs, bringing her career total to 1,409, just 24 shy of tying the program record.
"Our team showed some fight and some grit today," head coach Jill Kramer said. "We put more pressure on ISU from the service line and our offense started to get going. We played a lot smarter today, but need to close out sets when we have the opportunity."
TCU NOTABLES:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (ISU, 25-21): The Horned Frog offense got off to a shaky start as they looked for open space in the ISU back line. A 5-0 Cyclone run put the Frogs behind, 14-7, leading to the second Horned Frog timeout of the set. The momentum stayed in ISU's favor after the break, leading to a 15-point set win. Manyang finished with a team-best three kills on .250 hitting. Raiola and Nalls each finished with three digs.
Set 2 (TCU, 25-22): The Horned Frogs dug in defensively in the second set as both teams made multiple scoring runs in a thrilling series of volleyball. The first run came from TCU as kills from Adams and Manyang bookended an ace from Nichols for a 4-0 run, putting TCU in front, 6-3. ISU took the lead back, 12-11, but a kill from Adams and another ace, this time from Madilyn Cole, put TCU back in front, 14-12. Errors and quality defense from ISU allowed them to go in front once again, 18-16, before a block from Zoe Hall and Manyang (Hall's first-collegiate block) sparked a 6-0 TCU run and the Frogs led, 22-18. But the momentum swings weren't finished yet as ISU stormed back to tie things at 22-22, before the Frogs finally fought off the Cyclones with a kill from Nichols to win, 25-22. Manyang led the Frogs with four kills while Dennison, Cole and Nichols each added aces for TCU's first set victory of the 2021 season.
Set 3 (TCU, 27-25): The third set was another battle with both teams giving everything they had to try and take the lead in the match. The Horned Frogs found continued success on the right side attacks by Manyang, going in front, 15-11. Iowa State managed to tie the score back at 20-20, even going in front, 23-21. But a clutch kill from Raiola sparked a 3-0 run, and TCU had its first set point. Iowa State fought off the initial set point before Adams put the Frogs in front for good, 26-25. An ISU error ended things in the third and TCU had its first lead of the Big 12 season. Adams led the offense with five kills along with four each from Manyang and Raiola. Raiola and Dennison were instrumental in the win, finishing with seven and six digs, respectively between them.
Set 4 (ISU, 25-22): The Horned Frogs looked to have the match wrapped up, playing good defense and recording kills with a high rate of efficiency. The Forgs made a late, 5-1 run to go in front, 22-19, but Iowa State rattled off six points in a row to win the set and deny the victory. Adams and Raiola were workhorses in the set, finishing with 13 kills between the two of them. TCU out-killed Iowa State, 19-11 in the set but errors in the wrong times doomed the Frogs.
Set 5 (ISU, 15-4): Iowa State grabbed momentum in the fifth set by winning the first four points and TCU never managed to regain its composure, dropping the fifth by 11 points.
UP NEXT:
The Horned Frogs are on a bye week next week before hosting Oklahoma in Schollmaier Arena, Oct. 8-9.
