The Horned Frogs dropped their first home match of the season on Saturday.
FORT WORTH, Texas – Despite taking the doubles point, the TCU women's tennis team could not hold off No. 27 Texas Tech as the Red Raiders came back to take victory, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at the indoor facility inside the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
Texas Tech (13-4, 3-0 Big 12) struck first in the match with a victory at the two spot in doubles, but the Horned Frogs (10-5, 3-1 Big 12) responded as Aleksa Cveticanin and Ellie Douglas got their seventh straight win and improved to 9-1 on the season with a 6-3 victory on the top court. Even at 4-4 on the final court, Mercedes Aristegui and Kate Paulus got a break and then Paulus was able to serve it out to give TCU the 6-4 victory and the doubles point.
The match was far from over as Texas Tech took four first sets to open singles action with three of the matches going into third set deciders. The Red Raiders took straight-set victories on courts five and one to get on the board before capturing a three-set win on court two to inch closer to the victory. Paulus stopped the momentum by scoring win No. 10 on the season on court four as the freshman got the 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 victory. Texas Tech was out front on the final two courts and clinched the overall match win with a straight-set win on court six.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"Today was another good college tennis match to be a part of. I give all the credit to Texas Tech for a great fight back after doubles. It was big for our team to have Kate (Paulus) and Mercedes (Aristegui) close out that doubles point for us. They haven't had to do that for us yet this year in a big moment and it feels nice that we have three reliable doubles teams heading down the stretch. In singles, I think we were just way overhyped and way too many mistakes on our top two courts. Texas Tech does a good job every year of playing tough, solid tennis. It is not always flashy, but it is gritty and solid and that wins lots and lots of matches. When we don't match that toughness, our extra stuff isn't relevant. Match after match these last four weeks we will have quality opponents just like Texas Tech. We will get rested tomorrow and have a great practice and preparation Monday for our match Tuesday against SMU."
