TCU primed for first NCAA appearance since 2017
BATON ROUGE, La. – The NCAA Tournament is here, and the TCU women's tennis team will start off with a matchup against Rice on Saturday at 11 a.m. at LSU Tennis Center.
TCU (20-4) is coming off one of its most impressive weeks in program history, winning its first Big 12 Tournament title in program history. Coming into a season where the team was picked to finish seventh in the league, the Frogs amassed all expectations and turned in a storybook season that is not done yet.
After defeating No. 1 seed UCF for the Big 12 Tournament crown, TCU holds a 20-4 record for the season, which is the first time since 2008 that the Frogs have recorded 20 or more victories. If TCU were to win tomorrow, the 21 wins on the year would be the most since the 2006 campaign where the Frogs had 23 triumphs.
Tickets for the Baton Rouge NCAA Regional will be priced at $5 for adults and $3 for kids and can be purchased here or online at lsusports.net under the Tournament Info page. For TCU fans interested in attending the event in person, parking is available in Lot 411, opposite the LSU Tennis Complex, but it is limited. Furthermore, Lots 408-409 will be unavailable due to reserved parking for LSU Baseball's series against South Carolina.
Earlier in the week, numerous individuals were honored with Big 12 awards. The highlight of the accolades was Jennifer Jackson winning Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors and Lee Taylor Walker being named the Big 12 Coach of the Year. Raquel Caballero Chica, Yu-Chin Tsai, Cristina Ramos Sierra, Victoria Gomez O'Hayon, Cayetana Gay and Tomi Main were also given conference recognitions for their impressive campaigns in both singles and doubles play.
The Frogs will look to advance out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history. TCU accomplished this feat for the lone time in school history in the 2006 season, as the team was able to make its way to the NCAA Third Round.
The winner between TCU and Rice will play in the Baton Rouge Regional Final, slated for May 3 at 2 p.m.
SCOUTING THE OWLS
Rice punched its way into the NCAA Tournament via an automatic bid earned by winning the American Conference Tournament Championship. The Owls and Frogs are very familiar with each other, as the two teams faced off during the indoor season, with TCU posting a highly-contested 4-0 victory.
The Owls, ranked 42nd in the most recent ITA poll, have one doubles pair that currently has a national recognition. Darya Schwartzman and Uma Bakaityte, two of the prominent contributors for Rice, are ranked at No. 49 nationally in doubles.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
LSU, the host of this regional and the No. 10 national seed heading into the NCAA Tournament, is coming off a trip to the SEC Tournament Championship, where the Tigers fell to Auburn, 4-3, in an intense battle. On the year, LSU is 19-9 and is also ranked 10th in the ITA poll.
The Tigers have five total singles players ranked inside the top 125 nationally, and LSU also has three doubles pairs who sit within the top 40 teams ranked in the latest ITA poll.
SCOUTING THE LADYJACKS
SFA is set to make back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in program history. The Jacks recently won the Southland Championship, earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
