The TCU men’s and women’s tennis teams will host SMU in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
FORT WORTH, Texas – The Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center will be host to a TCU men's and women's tennis doubleheader against SMU on Tuesday, March 26 as the women take on the Mustangs at 3 p.m., before the men face-off at 5:30 p.m.
Admission is free to both matches and fans can enjoy free pizza courtesy of Buffalo Bros., and free popcorn courtesy of King Korn between the doubles and singles portion of the matches. A free tailgate for fans over the age of 21 and free tacos from Taco Heads will also be available starting at 4:30 p.m.
TCU Notables
The TCU women's tennis team will be competing in its last nonconference match of the season after dropping a 4-2 decision to No. 27 Texas Tech over the weekend. The Frogs have won four of their last five matches and are 9-1 in matches played at home. Ellie Douglas boasts a ranking in the singles and doubles poll with the freshman checking in at No. 112 with seven wins this season and at No. 27 with Aleksa Cveticanin as the duo are riding a seven-match winning streak with a 9-1 mark on the year.
The TCU men's tennis team is still at No. 10 in the Oracle/ITA team poll and riding a nine-match winning streak headed into Tuesday's match with SMU. The Frogs have a ranked singles player and a ranked doubles duo inside the top 10 along with two other ranked singles players. No. 7 Alex Rybakov leads the team with an 18-1 mark and a seven-match winning streak while No. 25 Alastair Gray is also on a seven-match winning streak with a 14-2 mark on the year. Bertus Kruger holds a No. 115 singles mark and sits at No. 6 in the doubles poll with Reese Stalder with the duo picking up 14 wins this year including a 4-0 mark against ranked opponents.
Scouting the Mustangs
The SMU women's tennis team has won its last three matches with sweeps of Northwestern State and Abilene Christian while also posting a 6-1 victory over Dartmouth. Liza Buss holds the Mustangs' only ranking at No. 114 as she leads the team with 16 wins on the year with five of them coming over ranked opponents. Ana Perez-Lopez also has 16 wins in 2019 with seven wins coming in dual matches. In doubles, Tiffany Hollebeck and Karina Traxler have a 12-3 mark on the year and have picked up a team-best nine wins in dual matches.
The SMU men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision over No. 46 USF over the weekend after scoring a 5-2 win over LMU last weekend. The Mustangs have two ranked singles players in No. 74 Carles Sarrio Tamarit and No. 124 Jan-Simon Vrbsky. Sarrio Tamarit has a team-best 20 wins on the season with nine of them coming at the No. 1 spot along with two over ranked opponents. Vrbsky has 16 wins including a perfect mark on courts one and three to go along with one win over a ranked opponent. Vrbsky is leading the team in doubles with Tomas Vaise with 11 wins as the duo have six of them on court one.
All-Time Series Records
Tuesday will mark the 51st meeting all-time between TCU and SMU on the women's side with the Frogs holding an advantage in the all-time series record at 31-19. TCU has won the last five straight meetings between the teams and this will be the first match against SMU since 2016 when the Frogs got the 7-0 win at home. Tuesday's match will be the 24th showdown in Fort Worth as TCU leads the all-time series in matches played at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center at 16-7.
The men will square-off for the 63rd time in program history with TCU holding a 33-29 advantage in the all-time series record. This will be the 46th straight season the teams have faced off with the Frogs winning the last eight straight matches and nine of the last 10. The last time SMU picked up a win in Fort Worth came in 2007 with TCU holding a 16-11 advantage in matches played on the Bernard J. 'Tut' Bartzen Varsity Courts.
