TCU earned its second straight Big 12 victory on Friday afternoon.
FORT WORTH, Texas – A strong performance in doubles along with gutsy singles comebacks propelled the TCU women's tennis team to a 5-2 victory over Iowa State on Friday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs (8-4, 2-0 Big 12) controlled all three courts of doubles against the Cyclones (5-5, 1-1 Big 12) and were up multiple breaks. No. 41 Ellie Douglas and Aleksa Cveticanin got to the finish line first as the duo won their fourth straight match with a 6-3 victory over Maty Cancini and Annabella Bonadonna. Mercedes Aristegui and Kate Paulus clinched the early lead for TCU as the duo got the 6-2 win over Ekaterina Grib and Margarite Timakova on court three.
Iowa State did not back down from the challenge and fought back in singles and grabbed three first sets while five of the six courts went three sets. Addy Guevara was the only player to finish in straight sets as the freshman put point No. 2 on the board with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court six. Cveticanin overcame a slow start as the sophomore rebounded on court two, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 to put the Frogs closer to the match victory. The Cyclones rattled off wins on courts three and four, but those were the only points they would get as TCU finished off the match with victories on the final two courts. Ellie Douglas overcame a formidable Cancini on the top court to get the 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(2) win to clinch the match, while Chloe Hule took a 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-2 on court five to end the match.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"We had a great doubles point today with some dominant play on all three courts. I give credit to the Iowa State coaches for the singles response. They really brought the fight to us and had great energy. We snuck out of there with a win and we are happy about that. We learned that our passion and motivation has to be deeper regardless of our opponent. Everyone can easily get motivated when you're the underdog or evenly matched, but we have to respect the game of tennis when we are the favorite and handle that better. Ellie (Douglas) and Aleksa (Cveticanin) are a great one-two punch and I'll put them up against anybody. I am proud of their resiliency today. Addy (Guevara) was dominant again and Chloe (Hule) really stepped it up and closed it out with authority today. I am pumped for her and her improvement makes our team a totally different team. We need more of that from her."
