WACO, Texas - TCU's women's volleyball team fell in dramatic fashion Wednesday evening, 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-13), to Baylor inside the Bears' Ferrell Center.
The Horned Frogs dropped to 13-7 on the year and 2-5 in Big 12 action. Host Baylor improved to 14-7 and evened with TCU at 2-5 in the league. It was the second five-set match of the year for the Frogs, who are now 1-1 in those matches.
The deciding fifth set was highlighted by runs and was as thrilling as the 15-13 score indicated. For the first time all night, TCU was the first to five as it took a 5-2 lead on a Sutton Sunstrum kill and Baylor attacking error.
TCU extended its lead to 7-3 and appeared in control of the final frame at 9-6, only to see the Bears rattle off four-straight points to grab a 10-9 lead of their own. Not to be outdone, TCU won the next three points and retook the lead at 12-10.
Baylor evened the set at 12, but a Mattie Burleson kill made it 13-12 in favor of the Frogs and forced BU into its final timeout of the match. With Burleson set to serve out of the timeout, TCU was called for having too many players on the court and the Bears won the next two points for a 15-13 set three win and 3-2 triumph in the match.
TCU found itself in an early hole in the first set when four service errors gave the Bears a 19-13 lead. The Frogs got within two with a 4-0 run highlighted by a Burleson kill and block, but would never get any closer as BU took a 1-0 lead with a 25-21 set one win.
Sutton Sunstrum, who set a career high with seven kills against Kansas State, continued her hot play in the first set, leading the Frogs with five kills on eight attacks to go along with five digs. Burleson had two kills and two blocks in the opening frame.
The second set was back and forth the entire way and neither team led by more than two until a Sloane Sunstrum kill gave TCU a 22-19 lead following a Bear timeout. Back-to-back kills followed for Yvonne Igodan and TCU broke the set open with a 6-0 run for a 24-19 lead.
Sutton Sunstrum put the exclamation point on the set with a kill, which was her fourth of the set to go along with eight digs, as TCU evened the score at 1 with a 25-21 set one win. It snapped a 13-set streak without a set win into the match's intermission.
TCU fell into an early 2-5 hole in the second set, but used a 5-0 run to take a 7-5 lead. Igodan had a block and a kill in the run as Baylor also helped the cause with two attacking errors. The Frogs and Bears traded points and neither led by more than one until a Bear attacking error gave TCU a 21-19 lead.
Out of timeouts, Baylor could do nothing to stop the Frogs, who finished set three on a 6-2 run for a 25-21 win and 2-1 lead. Sloane Sunstrum had four kills in the set, while Sutton Sunstrum and Igodan added three to lead TCU offensively. Meghan Horio had nine digs in the set and Sutton Sunstrum added six.
With the 2-1 cushion, TCU held the lead just three times in the fourth set and for the final time in the frame at 6-5. Baylor took a 19-16 lead late in the set and TCU got within two, but the Bears closed on a 6-2 lead to take set four 25-19 and knot the match at 2.
Overall, Sutton Sunstrum had her first-career double-double with a career-best 15 kills and career-best 22 digs. Sloane Sunstrum's match-high 26 digs were a career high and the senior added a season-best 16 kills. Megan Munce also had a double-double, her ninth of the season, with 42 assists and 10 digs.
TCU finished the match with 95 digs to tie for the ninth-most in a match in a five-set match in program history. The Frogs' 17 blocks are also tied for the ninth-most ever in a match. TCU held a 6-5 edge in service aces, but also had 13 service errors.
TCU returns to action Saturday when it travels to No. 21 Kansas for its final match in the first round robin of Big 12 play. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
