PROVO, Utah - Kaylie Garcia brought the Horned Frogs within one late in the contest on Wednesday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as TCU dropped a hard fought 3-1 decision to Utah in the opening round of the Mountain West Conference Championship. In the 79th minute of the match, Garcia turned to her right off a pass from Chelsea Cody and fired a shot into the back of the net past the outstretched arms of Utah keeper Hannah Turpen to make the score 2-1 at South Stadium on the campus of BYU.
Early in the match, Cody tried to connect from outside the box, but her shot in the 5th minute was stopped by Turpen. A few moments later, freshman Leigha Leonard played a ball into the box, but Jackie Torda, who earned all-conference accolades on Tuesday night, couldn't find the header to keep the score at 0-0 early in the contest.
Lizzy Karoly, a senior from California, continued to pressure the Utes in the 10th minute, but her run was saved by Turpen.
Following a goal by Kelly Isleib in the 25th minute, Torda tried to punch one in from about 20 yards out midway through the half, but watched as her shot was blocked by a Utah defender.
TCU pressured the Utes early in the second half, but Utah's Lauren Porter scored off a header inside the box to push the Ute lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute.
Leonard tried to bring the Frogs within one in the 54th minute, just missing high over the top half of the goal.
Karoly made a run midway through the half, but couldn't finish the run at the halfway point of the field.
Garcia continued to pressure the Ute defense with 11 minutes remaining in the second half, but her shot missed wide of the goal. The sophomore found the back of the net in the 78th minute off a pass from Cody to bring the Frogs within one. On the play, Cody found Garcia wide on the left side of the field and bent the ball into the corner of the goal to make the score 2-1.
Following an insurance goal by Erin Dalley in the 86th minute, TCU went on the offensive attack as Katie Taylor and Karoly both created scoring opportunities in Utah territory, but came up short. At the 89:45 mark, Karoly fired a shot towards the back of the net, but Turpen came up with another save to secure the 3-1 victory for Utah.
For the match, Taylor, Karoly and Garcia each posted two shots apiece as TCU fired a total of eight shot attempts.
Kelsey Walters, who made several key saves on Wednesday, recorded 10 saves in the match, while Turpen posted four on the day.
With the loss, TCU ended its season at 9-10-0 overall. Karoly, Michelle Nguyen and Kelly Faerber all played their final game in a Horned Frog uniform at South Stadium on Wednesday. The trio has been a part of 37 wins and three-straight postseason appearances.
