FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior Michelle Nguyen netted a penalty kick goal in overtime Thursday to lead TCU to a 1-0 victory over Air Force at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium."We got the win today and in conference play that is all that matters," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "We found a way to get the result against a Mountain West Conference opponent."
Nguyen, who netted her second goal of the season, beat Falcon goalkeeper Ariana Green in the 93rd minute, placing the ball into the back of the net past the outstretched arms of Green.
TCU, who missed on several scoring opportunities throughout the match, outshot the Falcons, 14-5, including 6-1 in the first half. The Frogs also recorded a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks against Air Force on Fort Worth ISD Day at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. Sophomore Jordan Calhoun led TCU on the offensive attack with five shots, while Katie Runyon and Nguyen each posted three on Thursday afternoon.
Early in the match, Calhoun tried to put the Frogs on the board on three consecutive occasions, but her shot in the 8th minute of the contest was saved by Green.
Calhoun appeared to have given TCU a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute of the match, beating Green, but the Frogs were called for offsides on the play to keep the score at 0-0 midway through the half.
Runyon got into the offensive attack a few minutes later, from the right side of the field, but her header inside the box went wide of the net.
Kelly Faerber, a senior from Austin, almost found the back of the net midway through the half, but her rocket from outside the box sailed high over the goal.
Nguyen tried one last time before halftime to give TCU the lead, but watched as her shot was blocked by an Air Force defender.
Following the break, Runyon made a run into Falcon territory, but was denied as her shot darted just wide of the back of the net.
In the 61st minute, Kelsey Walters came up with a huge save, stopping a one-on-one chance from Stepha Patterson to keep the score at 0-0. Following a shot by Kaitlyn Shelledy in the 67th minute, Leigha Leonard, a freshman from Colorado, stopped a Falcon run, darting in front of Eryn Avjian to ricochet the ball off the post before it crossed the goal.
Late into the contest, Calhoun tried to rally the Frogs off a cross from Leonard, but her shot from the middle of the box was saved by Green.
Runyon tried one last time in the final seconds of the game to give TCU the 1-0 victory, but she missed wide right of the goal.
Two minutes into the overtime period, the Falcons were called for a foul from inside the box, giving Nguyen the penalty kick to secure the 1-0 victory.
Walters had a solid day in net on Thursday afternoon, saving four shots, while Green posted two saves.
With the win, TCU moved to 8-5-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in Mountain West play, while Air Force dropped to 2-10-1 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play.
The Horned Frogs will continue conference play on Saturday night against Wyoming. Start time for the match is set for 7 p.m. in Fort Worth.
