Effort-filled performance guides TCU past Bulldogs

FORT WORTH – In a high-effort and intense showdown between two conference powers, the TCU women's soccer team was able to secure the win over No. 17 Georgia, 3-2, on Thursday night at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.

The second of four straight showdowns against SEC opponents saw the Horned Frogs (2-1-1) play more of their brand of soccer against Georgia. Whether it was slide tackles, effort plays or winning contested balls, TCU showed grit and determination tonight in order to pull out the 3-2 victory.

Grace Coppinger made her season debut for TCU tonight and put on a clinic on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. The fifth-year defender started to settle into her own form quickly on defense while scoring a goal in the first half as well.

THE RUNDOWN
The dramatics got started in the match early, as Kamdyn Fuller seemingly put a goal into the back of the net in the third minute of action, but after video review it was ruled that the sophomore was offsides and the goal was disallowed.

Georgia would then go on to strike first in the eighth minute, but the Bulldog lead did not last for long. Just over three minutes later, Eres Freifeld received a ball from Peyton Nourse on the wing, put on a few dribbles then sent in a ball that was headed right towards the goal. The ball had a beautiful curve on it that was able to go over the goalies reach and land in the back of the net to tie the match up at 1-1.

TCU would strike once again in the 26th minute, this time off a beautiful set piece design that led to a Bella Diorio ball into the box that was headed in by Coppinger in her return to action.

The Frogs would close out the half still ahead 2-1. In a physical first 45 minutes, TCU was able to hold their own and head into the locker room looking to keep the momentum in the second half.

The momentum would be kept, as just over 15 minutes into the second frame the Frogs would find a way to increase the advantage. Emma Yolinsky was fed by Diorio right on the edge of the box, did a pair of cutbacks, then fired a beautiful curling ball that was perfectly placed outside the goalies reach to reach the back of the net and give TCU a 3-1 advantage.

TCU would keep the match at a stalemate for next 25 minutes, but then the Bulldogs would threaten late in the match, scoring in the 88th minute to pull within a goal. Despite the late score from Georgia, TCU was able to close out the game and pull out the victory.

Olivia Geller held it down in goal, playing all 90 minutes and tallying two saves on the night.

MATCH NOTABLES

With tonight's win, TCU earned its second ranked victory of the season, also knocking off No. 22 Wisconsin in the season opener.
Grace Coppinger scored off a free kick in from Bella Diorio, marking her first score since the 2023 season.
Emma Yolinsky posted her third goal in two matches with the game-winning score in the second half.
Eres Freifeld scored the first goal of her TCU career tonight with her first-half score from right on the edge of the box.
Peyton Nourse picked up her first TCU assist on the Freifeld score.
Today was the first multi-assist match of Bella Diorio's career.
Olivia Geller, Zoe Cuneio, Evie Baker, Cameron Patton and Grace Coppinger played all 90 minutes tonight.
Madison Taylor, Hannah Harms, Mackenzie Hilderman, Giovanna Costanzo and Grace Vest were subs tonight for the Frogs.
Despite getting outshot 12-10, TCU was able to secure its second gritty win of the season when losing the shot battle.
Tonight was the first meeting between these two programs.

UP NEXT
TCU will face off against two more SEC opponents during the nonconference slate, taking on Texas A&M on the road (Sept. 3) before returning home for a tilt versus Texas (Sept. 6).
