FORT WORTH – Playing its second match in as many days, No. 15 TCU volleyball opened the Fight in the Fort tournament with a 3-0 sweep of Wyoming on Thursday night inside Schollmaier Arena.
Just 24 hours after coming off their five-set win over No. 8 Texas A&M, the Horned Frogs (5-1, 0-0 Big 12) took on the Cowgirls (2-5, 0-0 Mountain West) in the first of three contests to close out a six-match homestand. TCU cruised to victory, claiming its 12th consecutive win at home, dating back to last year, and tied its best start to a season since 2015, when the Frogs also started off 5-1 through six matches.
TCU's success at the service line set the tone for the match. The Frogs tallied eight aces, led by junior Rosemary Archer with three, and kept Wyoming's offense out of system for the majority of the match. Becca Kelley paced the offense with 11 kills, followed by Evan Hendrix, who notched double-digit kills for the fifth straight match, finishing with 10. Sarah Sylvester and Lauren Murphy each tallied eight kills on very efficient nights, hitting .636 and .533, respectively.
The defense had the block going once again, picking up nine rejections at the net. Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week Sylvester and Murphy led the charge with five each. Libero Alice Volpe was stellar, recording 23 digs, the third most in a three-set match in program history.
From the jump, it was all TCU. Kelley sparked an early 5-0 run with a kill and an ace to put the Frogs up 6-2. Archer then went on a personal 3-0 run at the service line, dropping all three of her aces on the Cowgirls in a row. TCU cruised the rest of the way behind a balanced attack that saw kills from seven different Frogs, including Mikala Young and Mckenzie Berg, who made her collegiate debut and tallied her first two career kills, one of which capped off a 25-13 set one victory.
Wyoming kept things closer to start the second set before breaking through with a 6-0 scoring run. Trailing 8-14, TCU didn't panic, rattling off a run of four and a run of three to tie the set back up at 15 all. Hendrix and Kelley came alive in the second, helping fuel the comeback and a late 5-0 run that helped the Frogs win 25-21.
With a two sets to none lead, TCU was in the driver's seat. Murphy helped the Frogs build up a small three-point advantage going into the media timeout at 15-12. She and Sylvester scored the first two points out of the break to increase the lead to four, which proved to be too much for the Cowgirls. Emily Van Groningen and Murphy sealed the victory with a block to help TCU win its fifth in a row.
The Fight in the Fort continues on Friday, Sept. 12, in Schollmaier Arena. The Frogs will play a doubleheader against Rhode Island (11 a.m. CT) and No. 23 Missouri (6:30 p.m.).
