ORLANDO, Fla. – A valiant comeback effort by TCU freshman Ellie Douglas came up just short as she fell to No. 7-seeded Alex Graham of North Carolina, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, in the Round of 64 of the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., on Monday.
The 13th player in program history to be selected for the singles championship and first since 2015, Douglas rallied from a slow start that saw her drop the opening set and fall behind 4-1 in the second. Undeterred, she promptly won three consecutive games to bring it back to even at 4-4. Although Graham held serve to regain the lead, Douglas bounced right back, holding serve twice with a huge service break between to claim the second frame, 7-5.
Neither player gave an inch in the early goings of the decisive third set, as they battled to a 4-4 tie. Douglas quickly grabbed control by breaking Douglas to go up 5-4, but Graham returned the favor in the following game and was able to close out the match from there, winning 7-5.
Ranked No. 49 in the Oracle/ITA rankings, Douglas racked up 11 wins this season, including five over ranked opponents. The McKinney, Texas native has been ranked for the last month in the singles poll and had previously climbed to as high as No. 51. After joining the team in January, the freshman played solely at the No. 1 position in both singles and doubles and recorded six singles wins in her first season in Big-12 play.
Douglas picked up multiple postseason honors in her debut season including Big 12 Freshman of the Year, All-Big 12 Singles First Team, All-Big 12 Doubles Second Team, Big 12 All-Freshman Team and ITA Texas Region Rookie of the Year.
