TCU will hit the road for the first time in 2019 to face Texas A&M and Rice.
FORT WORTH, Texas – After starting the season with a perfect 5-0 mark, the TCU women's tennis team will hit the road for the first time in 2019 as the Horned Frogs travel to Texas A&M and Rice.
TCU (5-0) will first travel to College Station to take on the Aggies (6-0) on Monday, Feb. 4 at Noon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center before traveling to Houston to face the Owls (2-1) on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m., at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
TCU Notables
TCU capped off a five-match home stand to open the 2019 season by scoring a 6-1 win over North Texas on Friday afternoon. The Frogs are 5-0 on the season and only dropped five points across the five matches.
Freshmen Mercedes Aristegui and Kate Paulus have continued their hot streak in singles action as the duo are both 5-0 on the year with four of each of their five victories coming in straight sets. Sophomore Aleksa Cveticanin is also undefeated on the year in singles with three of her wins coming at the No. 1 spot. Freshman Ellie Douglas and sophomore Stevie Kennedy got wins over ranked foes in the last match to mark their firsts of the season.
Scouting the Aggies
Texas A&M is also undefeated to open the 2019 season with a 6-0 mark and sweeps in four of the contests. Most recently, the Aggies scored identical 6-1 victories over UNLV and Lamar over the weekend. Jayci Goldsmith is the only ranked player for the Aggies and sits at No. 110 in the Oracle/ITA singles poll. Goldsmith is 6-0 on the season with four of the victories coming on court one. Two other Texas A&M players are boasting 6-0 marks as well with Riley McQuaid and Katya Townsend also staying perfect in singles. Goldsmith pairs up with Tatiana Makarova in doubles action with the duo going 6-0 at the No. 1 spot.
Scouting the Owls
Rice is 2-1 on the season with victories over Lamar (6-1) and Sam Houston State (6-1) in January before dropping a 4-3 loss to Baylor. Anna Bowtell and Victoria Smirnova each have a 3-0 mark to start the season and each have 11 overall singles victories to lead the Owls. Rice has two ranked doubles teams with Linda Huang making an appearance on both. Huang sits at No. 55 with Michaela Haet and No. 59 with Priya Niezgoda.
All-Time Series
Monday's match will be the 48th meeting all-time between TCU and Texas A&M with the Aggies holding the slight advantage in the all-time series record at 24-23. This will be the 22nd time the teams have faced off in College Station with Texas A&M once again holding the slight advantage at 11-10. The Aggies are currently riding a three-match winning streak against the Frogs and a victory in seven of the last eight meetings. TCU last got a win in January 2015 when they upset Texas A&M, 4-2, at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in College Station.
Rice and TCU will be facing off for the 40th time in program history on Wednesday as the Frogs lead the all-time series with a 27-12 record. The match marks the third straight season the teams have faced off with TCU getting the victory in the last two matches. Wednesday's match will be the 15th time the teams have gone head-to-head in Houston with TCU's record sitting at 8-6 in matches played at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. The Frogs have picked up the victory in 14 of the last 15 matches played with Rice's only win coming in 2013.
