LAWRENCE, Kan. - In a game that could have gone either way, TCU pulled within six late in the second half Saturday, but couldn't complete the comeback, falling to No. 8 Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse, 81-72.
The Horned Frogs went on a 12-2 run midway through the second stanza of action Saturday and appeared to be well on their way to handing KU their first home loss of the season, but the Jayhawks were able to withstand the rally with some late free throws to escape with the win.
On the day, TCU (16-11 overall; 3-11 Big 12) out-rebounded Kansas, 33-29. In a game that featured nine ties and seven lead changes, the Frogs also forced the Jayhawks into 14 turnovers, while holding a 19-14 edge in points off turnovers.
Individually, Trey Zeigler led the way for the Purple and White, scoring a season-high 20 points on 7-of-12 from the field, including going 6-for-10 from the charity stripe. With his 20-point outing, Zeigler, who scored 13 in the second half alone, has now posted 20 20-point games in his career. Senior's Kyan Anderson and Amric Fields were also in double-figures tallying 14 and 11 points apiece, respectively. Anderson also dished out seven assists in the loss, while Fields tied sophomore Karviar Shepherd with a team-high six boards.
Kansas, now 22-5 on the season and 11-3 in Big 12 action, was carried by Perry Ellis' 23-point night. Devonte' Graham added 20 points on a perfect 7-for-7 from the field.
Anderson brought TCU within 35-33 on the opening possession, nailing a three ball, while getting fouled to inch the Frogs closer and complete a rare four-point play. A few trips later, Fields would burry a deep jumper to make the scoreboard read 37-35 in slight favor of Kansas with a little over 17 minutes remaining.
The Jayhawks would widen the gap to 47-39, but TCU continued to fight as Fields banked in a triple at the 11:59 mark to make it a 47-42 ballgame. The senior dialed one up again a few trips later to bring it to a 52-45 contest with a little over 9 minutes left in the game.
With the scoreboard 59-47, Ziegler went to work, driving to the bucket and scoring an old fashioned three-point play. Following a dunk by Kenrich Williams, sophomore Chris Washburn would nail a jumper and then watch as Fields scored an and-one to make it a 66-57 ballgame with 5:17 showing.
At the 3:50 mark of the second half and trailing by only nine, Zeigler exploded to the hole and found the bottom of the net plus the foul to bring TCU within six at 68-62. In all, it was a 12-2 run that helped to pull the Purple and White within six down the stretch, but Kansas held on with some late free throws for the victory.
Anderson got the Frogs going on the opening possession, draining a triple. A few plays later, the senior found a cutting Williams for the bucket and the Frogs tied the ballgame at 4-4 at the 17:52 mark.
Washburn would give TCU an 8-6 lead, stealing the rock and throwing it down over a KU player with a little over 14 minutes to go in the opening frame. A few plays later, Parrish got into the act, driving to the rack and scoring an old fashioned three-point play, which gave TCU a 14-13 lead midway through.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips until Williams dropped a triple at the 7-minute mark to give the Purple and White a 21-18 lead. Kansas responded with two-straight from downtown, but Zeigler tied the game at 24-24, driving by a would-be defender with 5 minutes left to go in the half.
The Jayhawks outscored the Frogs 11-5 the rest of the half to take a 35-29 lead into intermission.
