MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - In a game that featured nine ties and 14 lead changes, TCU pushed No. 17 West Virginia to overtime Saturday, but dropped a heartbreaker in the last second of the ballgame, falling 86-85 at WVU Coliseum.
Leading 83-81 with 14.7 seconds left in overtime, West Virginia nailed a three to take a one-point lead, but just like he did to end regulation, Trey Zeigler came up huge, knocking down another jumper in the closing seconds, which made the scoreboard read 85-84 in favor of TCU. The Mountaineers then proceeded to loop a pass over the Horned Frog defense and connect with Jevon Carter. On the play, Kyan Anderson was called for a foul sending Carter to the line for the game-winning points with 0.9 showing on the scoreboard.
With the loss, TCU, who out-rebounded the Mountaineers to the tune of 47-37, moved to 14-5 overall and 1-5 in league play, while WVU improved to 16-3 overall and 4-2 in conference action.
Anderson led the way for the Frogs with a game-high 22-point outing. The Fort Worth native did most of his damage in the first half, scoring 16 points in the period. Junior Charles Hill Jr. also had a solid outing, coming off the bench to score a season-high 13 points. The junior really seemed to spark the Frogs, hitting key shots throughout the contest. Amric Fields and Kenrich Williams were also in double-figures, scoring 11 points apiece, respectively, while Chris Washburn and Zeigler added 10 each.
WVU was carried by an 18-point outburst from Juwan Staten and Devin Williams, respectively. Williams also grabbed a game-high 12 boards in the win.
The two teams opened the second half trading buckets, but WVU would take a 42-37 lead until Washburn drilled a jumper at the 17:03 mark. A few plays later, Fields rattled the rim on a tip-in, which made the scoreboard 44-41, and the Frogs cranked up the defensive pressure, forcing a turnover on the next possession. Hill Jr. then went to work, going coast-to-coast to inch TCU closer at the 14-minute mark.
With the scoreboard 53-49 in slight favor of West Virginia, the Frogs got defensive, stealing the rock, but couldn't connect on the offensive end of the court. TCU continued to fight though, pulling within five at the charity stripe before the Mountaineers hit a three-ball with a little over 8 minutes remaining in the game.
Following a triple by Hill Jr. from the corner, Anderson drove the lane and found pay-dirt which made it a 58-56 ballgame. By the time Washburn tied the game at 58-58 with 6:21 left to go in the contest, the Frogs were on a 7-0 run and doing it on both ends of the court.
Anderson gave TCU a 60-58 lead with 5:24 left to go, but WVU retook the lead at 62-60 before Hill Jr. drove the length of the court to tie the ballgame back up at 62-62. A few plays later, the junior gave TCU the lead back at 64-62, nailing two-straight at the charity stripe.
He continued his scorching play at the 2:12 mark, burying a three-ball to give TCU a 68-64 lead. West Virginia battled back to tie the ballgame at 70-70, but Zeigler buried a jumper with 6.2 seconds left to give TCU a 72-70 advantage. West Virginia answered on the other end though to tie the ballgame and had one final chance, but couldn't find the bottom of the net at the end of regulation.
In overtime, TCU jumped all over the Mountaineers as Karviar Shepherd exploded to the rim for a dunk and Williams scored two more on the next possession to give the Frogs a 76-72 lead. A few plays later, Fields tipped in the rock to increase the TCU advantage to 78-74 and it appeared the Frogs were going to get out of Morgantown with a win, but WVU was able to win the game at the line with 0.9 seconds left in the contest.
West Virginia jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the game, but Anderson, who scored the first six points for TCU, would stymie the Mountaineer attack, hitting a floater at the 15:59 mark of the opening half. The senior would nail a step-back the next trip down and the Frogs were in business, trailing by one at 7-6.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of possessions as the Frogs took a one-point lead at 10-9, but it was short lived as WVU answered with a two on the other end. A few plays later, Amric Fields found pay-dirt inside the paint to make it a 14-13 TCU lead with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the period.
The Frogs would take a 19-18 lead at the 7:56 mark as Hill Jr. found a wide-open Washburn down low, whom promptly flushed it home to quiet the West Virginia crowd. WVU answered by going up 26-21 before the Frogs made some noise inside the paint, which included a tip-dunk by Washburn at the 4:19 mark to pull TCU within 28-25 down the stretch.
In the closing minute, Anderson took over, tickling the twine from way downtown to beat the shot clock on one possession and then connecting on an old fashioned three-point play to bring the halftime score to 36-35 in slight favor of West Virginia.
