FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU had one final chance to send the game into overtime Wednesday night, but couldn't connect on a late three allowing No. 9 Kansas to escape Wilkerson-Greines with a 64-61 victory.
Trailing by three in the closing seconds with no timeouts, the Frogs got the ball to Charles Hill Jr. to try and send the game into an extra session, but the junior's three with 1 second left ricocheted off the back rim.
The Horned Frogs, who pulled within two with 33 seconds left, fell to 14-6 overall and 1-6 in league play, while the Jayhawks improved to 17-3 overall and 6-1 in conference action.
On a night where TCU made Kansas work on every possession, the Frogs, who out-rebounded the Jayhawks, 50-40, including 26-9 on the offensive glass, had three players score in double-figures. Senior Kyan Anderson led the way, scoring a game-high 17 points on 5-of-18 from the field. Trey Zeigler was just as solid, recording his first double-double in a Horned Frog uniform with 12 points and a season-high 11 boards.
Sophomore Kenrich Williams rounded out the TCU notables on the offensive end, recording a career-high 13 points, while grabbing nine rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end. Finally, fellow sophomore Chris Washburn just missed a double-double with seven points and 12 boards on the night.
The Jayhawks were carried by Frank Mason's 16-point outing. No other KU player scored in double-figures thanks in large part to TCU's stifling defense, which forced 14 turnovers.
With the scoreboard reading 36-32 in slight favor of Kansas, Anderson tickled the twine from deep to pull the Frogs within one at 36-35 with 17:50 showing on the clock. The senior then found pay dirt on the next possession, finding the bottom of the net to give TCU a 37-36 advantage at the 17:34 mark of the second half.
A few plays later, Williams got into the act, powering home a tough layup to make it a 39-38 lead for the Frogs. The next trip down the court, Williams soared in for the dunk, which propelled the Purple and White lead to 41-40 with a little over 14 minutes remaining in the game.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips with Kansas clinging to a 48-43 advantage with 9:52 showing on the clock. TCU would continue to battle though, pulling within 55-48 at the charity stripe, but the Jayhawks answered on the other end.
Following a jumper by Zeigler with a little over 2 minutes remaining in the contest, Karviar Shepherd got defensive, taking a charge. A few plays later, Williams pulled the Frogs within five at 59-54 laying in the rock with 1:17 left to go.
With 45.6 showing on the clock, Zeigler attacked the rim, following his own miss to score an old fashioned three-point play, which pulled the Frogs within two at 59-57, but that was as close as TCU would come the rest of the way as the Purple and White got within three twice in the closing seconds.
Shepherd got the Frogs rolling right out of the gate, connecting on a tough layup plus the foul during the opening possession to tie the game at 2-2. A few plays later, Williams hit a runner, which pulled the Purple and White within 5-4.
By the time Anderson nailed a three from deep at the 17:20 mark, the Frogs had jumped all over KU, now up 7-5, after a mini 5-0 run. The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips, but Kansas was able to take a 14-8 advantage before Shepherd rattled home a jumper with 12:50 showing in the period.
With the scoreboard 23-14 in slight favor of the Jayhawks, Anderson found Shepherd for a deep two to inch TCU closer at the midway point of the opening frame of play.
The Frogs would turn up the pressure the rest of the half on both ends as Kansas took a 36-30 lead into the break.
