Prairie View, Texas - The TCU volleyball team snapped a four-game losing streak by sweeping Prairie View A&M 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-19) Wednesday night at the William J. Marks Building.
In their last nonconference game of the 2013 season, the Horned Frogs (14-11, 2-8 Big 12) had all 15 players see action in the match and hit a .322, while holding the Lady Panthers (10-24, 4-4 SWAC) to a .000 hitting clip.
PVAMU held a 2-0 lead in the match to start, but that is the only lead the Lady Panthers would have the entire night, as TCU would get back the lead with an ace from Trisha Langley. TCU continued to build on the lead by capitalizing off of errors by PVAMU and using a balanced offensive attack to get all 14 of its kills in the set. Leading 18-8, the Lady Panthers attempted to close the gap and held off set point on four occasions, but a kill from Lindsay Aston ended the set at 25-20.
The Frogs continued to dominate into the second set and only committed two hitting errors on their way to a .400 hitting percentage. Alexia Heist got TCU off on the right foot by dishing out two assists to Natalie Gower and Macy Capen, along with a service ace for a 3-0 lead. TCU continued to extend its lead, but an ace from LaKeisha Allen along with a kill from Janette Batista brought the match within one at 11-10. TCU did not let the Lady Panthers any closer and finished out the set by recording five blocks in the last few points to hold PVAMU to a negative hitting percentage in the set and win 25-16.
Stephanie Holland was the highlight of the third set, as the junior recorded the first point off a kill and ended the set with six kills and only one error for a .625 hitting percentage. Leading 3-2, the Frogs used a kill from Chyna Perkins to go on a 6-0 run, that including three blocks from Holland and Chyanne Perkins. Even though the Lady Panthers recorded four service aces in the set, TCU did not let that deter it from taking a 25-19 win in the set and sweeping the match.
TCU finished the match with 10 total blocks, making it the third match in a row and the 13th match this season the team has recorded double-digit blocks. Holland led all players with seven kills, while Gower had six and Mattie Burleson, Sutton Sunstrum and Blaire Pickens all chipped in five.
The Frogs will return to conference action on Saturday, Nov. 9, by hosting the Baylor Bears for a 1 p.m., match time at the University Recreation Center.
