LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska used a strong second-half run to pull away from TCU late during a 70-56 Frog road loss Saturday at the Huskers' Bob Devaney Sports Center.
TCU dropped to 7-4 overall this season and 1-1 on the road, while NU improved to 8-2 overall with its 20th consecutive non-conference home victory.
A basket and free throw by junior guard Ronnie Moss with 12:40 remaining gave the Frogs a one point lead, 42-41, but the advantage would prove to be short lived. Nebraska responded with a 13-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers by guards Eshaunte Jones and Lance Jeter, to pull away with the victory. The Huskers excelled from 3-point range throughout the afternoon, making 10-of-17 shots from beyond the arc.
Two Frogs scored in double figures, including Moss, who had a team-high 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Moss also led the squad with five rebounds, while junior guard Hank Thorns totaled game highs with four assists and three steals. Sophomore forward Garlon Green notched 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including a 3-for-4 effort from beyond the arc, while junior guard Sammy Yeager added nine points.
As a team, TCU shot only 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field Saturday, including only 30.3 percent in the first half. The squad did match a season high with 11 3-pointers Saturday, although it also took a season-high 28 attempts, eight more than its previous high.
Three Huskers scored in double figures, including Jeter and guard Toney McCray, who totaled 15 points each. The two players combined to shoot 7-of-8 from 3-point range against the Frogs, while McCray added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Center Jorge Brian Diaz also recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Nebraska did a nice job of using a noticeable size advantage to keep TCU off the glass throughout the game, as the Huskers outrebounded the Frogs by a 38-26 advantage. The performance ended a five-game streak where TCU had outrebounded its opponents
TCU started the second half strong following a poor-shooting opening period that saw the Frogs trail by nine points at intermission and by as many as 11 overall. The Frogs scored the first 12 points out of the locker room while holding NU scoreless for the first four-plus minutes. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Moss and Green gave TCU its largest lead at 36-33 with 15:55 remaining.
The Frogs had a tough time finding the scoreboard in the first half, missing several outside shots against the Huskers. The squad shot only 30.3 percent in the stanza, compared to a 44.4 percent rate for NU.
The Frogs held a two-point edge, 9-7, before NU turned it into a nine-points deficit with the help of a 14-3 run ending at the 10:16 mark. The Huskers recorded four 3-point plays during the run, including a trio of outside shots, two by Jeter and one by McCray. The lead stretched to 11 points on a trey by Jones with nine minutes remaining in the period.
The Frogs posted first-half 3-pointers by Moss, Thorns and Yeager to keep Nebraska from running away in the first half.
Due to finals week, TCU will take the next 10 days off from competition before returning to action at home Dec. 21 against Northwestern State. Tip-off has been scheduled for 7 p.m.
