
TCU Drops 3-1 Decision At Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The TCU volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (19-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-25 ) loss at Utah Saturday afternoon. Irene Hester tallied her first career triple-double with 12 kills, 11 assists and 12 digs.Hudson tallied her ninth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 22 assists. She also pitched in with seven digs and two blocks. Irene Hester added a service ace and three blocks. Raines pitched in with eight kills, two digs and two blocks. Yvonne Igodan tallied five kills, two digs and four blocks. Sloane Sunstrum had nine digs to go along with a block and an ace. Meghan Horio led the team with 16 digs.
Utah jumped out to a big lead and used it to claim the 25-19 set one victory. TCU fell into a 13-8 hole and called a timeout. The Frogs battled the Utes to keep the set close, but a 4-1 run by the Utes made it a 21-13 contest, prompting the Frogs to take their second timeout.
The Frogs used the break to try and build momentum for the second set. A loud denial on the outside by Sunstrum and Hudson started a Frog rally that would see them creep back into the set. Raines kept the ball rolling with a kill and Hudson teamed with Igodan on another block to make it a 23-16 contest. Following a service ace by Kristen Hester, the Utes took a timeout. Out of the break, the Utes traded points with the Frogs to lock up the set one win.
A devastating 9-0 run by the Utes to open up the second frame set the tone for set two. Trailing by 10, 11-1, the Frogs tried to get back in the set with a 5-0 run. Raines started the rally with a hard cross court blast and then teamed with Igodan on a block on the outside. After a Ute hitting error, Irene Hester and Igodan dropped in back-to-back kills to make it a five point set, 11-6.
Utah used an 8-3 run to rebuild its nine point cushion, 18-9, but the Frogs had another run in them as they pulled back within five, 22-17. Irene Hester served up an ace and Hudson dropped in a pair of kills. Two Ute hitting errors after a kill in the middle by Igodan forced the Utes to call a timeout. The break settled the Utes down and they closed out the 25-17 win with a 3-0 run.
The Utes again took an early 7-3 lead in the third set, but the Frogs fought back to even the score at seven. Raines started the 4-0 run with a kill. Igodan and Irene Hester teamed on a block and Raines served up an ace to tie the set. Utah broke the tie with a 2-0 run, but the Frogs held their ground and eventually got the set tied again at 15. Irene Hester, Hudson and Raines all contributed to the rally, while Sunstrum and Maddy Riggio served up aces.
After the Utes again took a two-point lead, the Frogs responded with a 3-0 run to take the lead. Hudson blasted a kill and Igodan and Irene Hester blocked a Ute attack to make it 18-17. After Utah came back to take a 23-21 lead, the Frogs rallied to tie the set at 23 behind a kill from Raines and an ace from Riggio. Hudson gave the Frogs set point and Raines finished off the 25-23 set three win.
Utah came storming out of the gates in the fourth set, took control and never looked back. Despite kills from Irene Hester and Hudson, the Utes were able to build a 17-8 lead. TCU tried to crawl back in the set as Irene Hester kept blasting kills from all over the court, but it wasn't enough as Utah claimed the 25-15 win.
The Frogs fall to 13-16 overall and 4-11 in conference play. TCU will close out the 2010 season this upcoming week when it hosts a pair of matches. The conference slate will conclude Wednesday night when San Diego State comes to town. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the University Rec Center. TCU will welcome old Conference USA foe South Florida Saturday afternoon for Senior Day. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
