MIDLAND, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team jump-started the fall tournament season with a solid showing at the Racquet Club Invitational Friday, advancing three singles players and a doubles tandem into the round of 16.
"Its nice start to the season and the folks in Midland have been very gracious hosts," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "I look forward to tomorrow and hope to have continued success."
Senior Megan Alexander, junior Maria Babanova and sophomore Kayla Duncan each claimed a pair of wins to open the weekend. Alexander stormed past Texas Tech's Caroline Starck, 6-1, 6-1, followed by a victorious battle over Rice's Alex Rasch, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-4. The Dallas, Texas native picked up her second win as a Horned Frog after falling in the first set and finding herself down 4-5 in the second stanza.
Duncan toppled Texas A&M's Sheri Olivier in her opening match, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, before defeating Madura Ranganathan from North Texas, 6-4, 6-0. Babanova advanced past the Mean Green's Amy Joubert, 6-0, 4-6, 10-7 and joined her teammates in the round of 16 with a win against Abilene Christian's Julia Mongin, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 10-8.
After dropping her opening round matchup, junior Idunn Hertzberg showed her perseverance with a three-set, back draw win against ACU's Lauren White, 6-3, 4-6, 10-4.
In doubles action, Duncan and Alexander advanced through the opening round after an injury forced UT Arlington's tandem of Daiana Negreanu and Nikola Matovivoa to withdraw. Babanova and Hertzberg fell in the round of 32 at the hands of Texas Tech's Stefanie Peanna and Natalie Leitch, 8-4.
