WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The TCU women's tennis team pushed through the opening day of the 2009 UNC-Kitty Harrison Invitational Friday.
The Frogs began the day in doubles action against Duke and Minnesota. Junior Katariina Tuohimaa and sophomore Kayla Duncan dropped their match to Duke's pairing of Ellah Nze and Amanda Granson, 8-3, while juniors Idunn Hertzberg and Maria Babanova claimed a win over Minnesota's Alessandra Ferrazzi and Tijana Koprivica, 8-5.
In singles, TCU had to face off with North Carolina State, followed by Minnesota. Hertzberg picked up the only win against the Wolfpack, taking down Tana Illova in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (5). Babanova dropped her match to Lenka Hojckova, 6-3, 6-3, while Tuohimaa fell to Berkeley Brock, 6-3, 6-1. Duncan stretched her match against Sandhya Nagaraj to three sets before losing, 6-2, 3-6, 10-6.
In the nightcap against the Gophers, Tuohimaa earned a win against Ferrazzi, 6-1, 6-4, while Hertzberg lost to Alexa Palen, 6-2, 6-4. Babanova lost her opening set to Koprivica, 6-4, but jumped ahead 1-0 in the second stanza before bowing out due to back spasms. Duncan did not compete in the second round of singles play due to illness.
"The Frogs played hard today and ended up having two injuries," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "Kayla fell ill and Maria hurt her back. Hopefully we will be able to recover enough to play tomorrow. It was a solid day overall, we look forward to competing again tomorrow."
