CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Kayla Duncan led the charge for the TCU women's tennis team Saturday in the second day of the Kitty Harrison Invitational. The Horned Frogs battled Duke, Georgia Tech and Maryland at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on the Duke campus.
"The Frogs played well today," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "We hit the ball well in singles. Kayla had the highest ranked win of her career and put together a really nice match."
The Frogs began the day in doubles action against Maryland and Georgia Tech. Junior Katariina Tuohimaa and sophomore Kayla Duncan picked up a pair of wins, defeating Maryland's duo of Julia Huschke and Jordan Hansbrough, 8-6, before dismantling Georgia Tech's tandem of Sasha Krupina and Eliabeth Kilborn, 8-4. TCU juniors Idunn Hertzberg and Maria Babanova dropped their match to Lisa Miller and Maggie MacKeever, 8-2.
Playing in her home state, Duncan upended No. 19 Ellah Nze from Duke, 6-3, 6-4. With the win, the 2009 All-MWC singles selection claimed her sixth victory over a nationally-ranked opponent this fall and moved to 13-6 overall this semester.
Tuohimaa dropped her singles match to Duke's Elizabeth Plotkin, 6-4, 7-6 (5), while Hertzberg was tripped up by the Blue Devils' Amanda Granson, 6-1, 6-1. Babanova did not compete in singles play due to an injury.
"Maria played in the first doubles match, but we need to get her back and get her evaluated Monday. She couldn't continue past the first match, but I am proud of her for trying to play."
TCU will move to the campus of North Carolina Sunday to take on Princeton and Virginia Tech.
