PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - TCU sophomore Kayla Duncan took down another ranked opponent at the 2009 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Thursday at The Riviera Tennis Club.
Duncan took down No. 72 Sonja Molnar from Iowa in straight-sets, 6-2, 7-5. Advancing into the semifinals of the consolation singles bracket, the Winston-Salem, N.C., native will meet No. 97 McCall Jones from BYU Friday.
"It was another strong performance by Kayla," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "She's headed to the semis and looking to continue to build and keep getting better as she goes."
Duncan has been playing superb tennis since last spring. After ending her freshman campaign on an 11-match winning streak, the 2009 all-MWC singles and doubles honoree went on to claim the singles title at the N.C. State Tar Heel Qualifier and a gold ball for her USTA Junior Clay Court Doubles crown. Currently unranked in the Campbell's/ITA Preseason Singles Rankings, Duncan has now defeated four opponents listed in the top-100 this week.
