MEXICO CITY - Former TCU women's tennis standout Macall Harkins garnered her first professional singles championship Sunday, claiming the title at the 2009 Mexico City 10K.
Harkins defeated three seeded opponents on her way to the crown, upending top-seeded Paula Zabala from Colombia in the championship match, 7-5, 6-4.
"We were on the courts, playing at the ITA Regional at Baylor, when we heard the great news that Macall won the Futures title in Mexico City," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "That is a great win and one that Macall will always remember as it is her first pro championship for singles.
The title marks the second professional victory in Harkins' career, as the Palos Verdes, Calif., product also claimed the doubles crown at the Via Christi Women's $10K in late July.
"Now she has both doubles and singles championships, which is very special," Hammond added. "The entire team is overjoyed to hear the news."
As a senior last spring, Harkins boasted the second-most wins of the Frogs with an overall singles record of 26-14, including a 15-10 clip from the No. 1 and 2 positions. The All-Mountain West Conference singles selection defeated 11 nationally-ranked players in her final year, finishing the season on a five match winning streak to lead TCU to a MWC tournament title and into the second round of the NCAA Championships. Harkins ended her college career with an overall singles record of 82-54.
