Frogs Reach Regional Quarters in Doubles and Singles

WACO, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team advanced a doubles squad, while sophomore Kayla Duncan remains alive in singles play after the third day of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championship Sunday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The No. 9-16 seeded doubles tandem of senior Megan Alexander and junior Maria Babanova advanced into the main draw quarterfinals, displacing the fifth-seeded pairing of Carolina Larsson and Maggie Mello from Texas, 8-4. The TCU duo will return to action at 10 a.m. Monday to take on the tournament's third-seeded team of Marta Lezniak and Pavi Francis from SMU.
TCU's fourth-seeded doubles pairing of junior Katariina Tuohimaa and Duncan dropped their round of 16 matchup against Texas A&M's Morgan Frank and Lauren Santacroce, 8-5.
From the singles' courts, Duncan upended a pair of Big XII foes, beginning the day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Sheri Olivier from Texas A&M. The win marked was the second for Duncan over the Aggie this fall, as she also defeated Olivier at the Racquet Club Invitational on Sept. 18.
Duncan followed with an outstanding straight-set win over fourth-seeded Taylor Ormond from Baylor, 6-4, 7-5. Ormond, ranked No. 32 in the ITA preseason singles listing, is the highest ranked win for Duncan in her short college career. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native has defeated five nationally-ranked players this fall. Duncan will take on Amanda Craddock from Texas in the main draw quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. Monday.
After falling in her opening singles match of the day, No. 111 Alexander bounced back in the consolation draw with a 1-6, 6-4, 14-12 victory over Frederica Denti from Sam Houston State. Alexander would find herself in an early 6-1 hole in the tiebreaker before saving four match points and claiming the win.
Junior Maria Babanova picked up another singles win for TCU, defeating Alex Rasch from Rice from the consolation bracket, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8. The Moscow, Russia product ended her stay with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to SMU's Shahazoda Hatamova. Tuohimaa defeated SHSU's Giorgia Pozzan, 7-5, 7-6 (7), before she ended her weekend with a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Abby Liu from Texas. Junior Idunn Hertzberg took down Texas A&M's Nazari Urbina, 6-1, 6-1, before falling to Lamar's Kaltrine Harbuzi, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8.
