
No. 17 Sooners stymie Frogs

NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 17 Oklahoma Sooners proved to strong for the TCU Horned Frogs as they fell in straight sets, 3-0 (13-30, 20-30, 23-30) Tuesday night in Norman. Anna Vaughn led the Frog attack with 10 kills, while Calli Corley paced the team defensively with nine digs. Lauren Otto pitched in with two solo blocks.An early deficit greeted TCU in game one, but it battled back to pull within two, 12-10. After the Sooners had gone on a 4-0 run to open the game, a lead they maintained until the Frogs went on a 5-1 run to cut into the lead. Kills from Emily Allen, Kourtney Edwards and LeMeita Smith helped spur the run.
Oklahoma responded, quickly regaining the advantage. It opened up a 10-point lead with a 9-1 run to take a commanding 21-11 lead and it rolled from there. The Frogs could not string together multiple points through the remainder of the set and Oklahoma claimed the 30-13 game one win.
A much more spirited effort on the part of the Frogs kept game two a tighter affair. TCU grabbed the early 5-2 advantage on kills from Smith and Vaughn, who capped the Frog run with a solo denial.
With the game tied at eight, Oklahoma took control with a 6-2 run. Vaughn stopped the Sooner run with a loud kill off the block and Lauren Otto followed with a kill to make it a 14-12 contest. Again, the Sooners put together a mini-run to regain a five-point advantage and went on to earn the 30-20 game two victory.
The Frogs controlled game three early on, taking as much as a four-point advantage late in the contest. Trailing 4-5, Vaughn rolled off five points on her serve helped along by an Edwards kill and blocks from Edwards, Hampton and Otto, giving TCU the 9-5 lead.
Oklahoma cut into the Frog lead, but TCU was able to maintain the lead with timely kills from Otto, Smith and Vaughn. An Otto solo block, the second of the set for her, gave TCU a 16-14 lead. Otto helped push the lead to three points, 18-15, with another kill and a service ace.
Following Otto's ace, the Sooner's went on an 11-2 run to take a commanding 26-20 lead and from there, Oklahoma took the game by a 30-23 score.
The Frogs fall to 17-10 on the season. They return to action Friday night as they face their second straight ranked opponent when they host No. 19 Utah. Match time at the University Rec Center is set for 7 p.m.
