PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- TCU women's tennis sophomore Nicole Leimbach won the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship on Sunday in Pacific Palisades, Calif. She is the first Horned Frog in school history on the women's side to win a grand slam event in collegiate tennis.
Leimbach, who is ranked No. 3 in the country, defeated No. 5 Daniela Bercek from Duke in straight sets in the championship match, 6-3, 6-4. The victory avenged two losses Leimbach suffered to Bercek last season in dual matches.
Prior to Leimbach, the best showing TCU women's tennis had in the ITA All-American was a pair of quarterfinal appearances by Rene Simpson in 1987 and Story Tweedie-Yates in 2004.
The Riviera/ITA All-American Championships are the first of three grand slam events in collegiate tennis. Next is the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
Leimbach owns a record of 5-0 this season, with four of her wins coming against players ranked in the top 30 in the country. Her next tournament appearance will be the ITA National Indoors, which take place over Nov. 3-6 in Columbus, Ohio.
