FORT WORTH, TexasSenior Sandora Irvin is having a huge year for the TCU Lady Frogs through their first 10 games. She has already broken several school records, the most recent of which was the all-time scoring record that had stood since 1990. Irvin netted 20 points in TCU's last contest at Utah Dec. 11 to give her 1,451 for her career and surpass the 1,448 put up by Janice Dziuk.
Other school records that fell earlier this season were free throws attempted and made and scoring average. In her career, Irvin has made 368 free throws and attempted 548. Dziuk is second in both categories with 357 and 511, respectively. The 13.7 points per game average Dziuk had during her career has been replaced with Irvin's 14.0 figure. Irvin steadily increased her scoring average from her freshman to junior years, going from 10.8 to 12.0 to 16.8. Her senior year has seen an exceptional jump to 21.6 points per outing.
Three other school records are likely to fall as well this season. Irvin is second in field goals made and attempted behind Dziuk and Leah Garcia. With 531 field goals, Irvin needs a mere 15 more to break Dziuk's record 545, and another 107 attempts will jump the 1,262 Garcia took. Assuming Irvin starts the remainder of TCU's 19 regular season games, she would need two more starts in postseason action to break Jill Sutton's record 116.
Heading into this season, Irvin held TCU's career marks for rebounds, rebounding average and blocked shots. Those figures currently stand at 1,112, 10.7 and 359. She needs 55 more boards to own the Conference USA record that is held by Abbie Willenborg from Marquette. Irvin snagged the league's blocked shots record last season and is 111 swats ahead of the next closest person.
Perhaps the most noteworthy record Irvin is chasing in 2004-05 is the NCAA blocked shots standard. Genia Miller from Cal State Fullerton set the bar in 1991 when her career came to a close with 428 to her name. Irvin's current figure leaves her 70 rejections away from toppling Miller's record. Her 359 is tied for ninth place with Denise Hogue from the College of Charleston. Irvin's career average for blocks of 3.45 is the sixth best in NCAA history, and she still has some room to move up on that list as well.
Irvin and the rest of the Lady Frogs will resume play Sunday, Dec. 19, at No. 9/10 Tennessee at 12:30 p.m. CST. To keep tabs on how Irvin is progressing, visit the official Web site of TCU athletics, www.gofrogs.com, and click the banner on the right side to view Irvin's Web page.
