CHICAGO, Ill. - Tulane's Jenny Kuhn became the first player in Conference USA women's tennis history to collect both the Player and Freshman of the Year honors, while her coach, David Schumacher, received his second Coach of the Year accolade, as the 2003 All-Conference USA Teams and individual awards were announced on Wednesday.
TCU placed its No. 1 duo of junior Paty Aburto and senior Rosa Perez on the first team, while junior Saber Pierce earned third team kudos. Aburto and Pierce repeated their all-conference team honors from last year, while Perez moved up from the 2002 third team.
Kuhn is 18-2 this spring in dual match play and is currently ranked 61st nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. She is also part of the No. 10 doubles tandem with fellow freshman Julie Smekodub, posting a 12-4 mark.
Schumacher, in his fourth season at Tulane, guided the 29th-ranked Green Wave to a 19-4 mark this season, capped by Tulane's second C-USA Championship and an automatic bid to the 2003 NCAA Tennis Championship, the program's fourth-straight appearance under his direction.
Kuhn is joined on the First Team All-Conference USA by Smekodub and teammate Erika Valdes, TCU's Paty Aburto and Rosa Perez and Louisville's Marie Louise Frolich-Hansen.
Second Team All-Conference USA features Monica Gonzalez-Gordo and Sabrina Lindemann of Memphis, DePaul's Szilvia Kelemen, Houston's Miranda Foley, Marquette's Eva Trujillo-Herrera and Tulane's Ana Maria Saaibi.
Cincinnati's Khushchehr Italia, DePaul's Marina Parashkevova, East Carolina's Lyndall Jordan, Houston's Analia Longoni, TCU's Saber Pierce and Tulane's Maria Ivanov comprise the third team.
The Conference USA sportsmanship awards for women's tennis were also announced. This award signifies those student-athletes, coaches or teams that perform an individual act of sporting behavior or generally conduct themselves with a high degree of good sportsmanship. TCU head coach Dave Borelli was cited as was the TCU team as a whole for good sportsmanship.
