Top Seeds Advance to Second Day in WAC Tennis Championships

FORT WORTH, Texas (Apr. 28) -- The top 4 women's seeds advanced in Friday's WAC tennis tournament action and SMU and Tulsa each posted first round wins in both men's and women's matches at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus.
SMU's men tennis squad, ranked 13th in the country, posted a 4-0 victory over Hawai'i and the Mustangs women, ranked 75th, blanked Rice, 5-0.
Host TCU also advanced with 5-0 win over San Jose State in the women's side of the bracket. The 26th-ranked Horned Frogs, top seed among the women's WAC clubs, play arch-rival SMU tommorrow at 1 p.m.
Second-seeded Tulsa, the nation's 27th-ranked women's team, takes on 38th-ranked Fresno State at 9 a.m. after each team advanced with 5-1 victories on Friday.
Rice meets San Jose State and Hawai'i battles UTEP in consolation play begining at 9 a.m.
Men's top-seed TCU, ranked 14th in the nation, clashes with 49th-ranked Tulsa as with 11th-ranked Fresno State plays 13th-ranked SMU. Both matches will be staged at 1p.m. Rice and Hawai'i take part in the men's consolation final at 9 a.m.

Bulldogs Oust Miners, 5-1Fresno State's Kandiss Creighton defeated UTEP's Jana Perkova in straight sets as third-seeded Fresno State defeated sixth-seeded UTEP, 5-1, at the No. 2 singles position in the first round of the women's WAC Championships.
Fresno State later recorded wins at the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots to capture the win. UTEP recorded its lone point at the No. 1 slate as senior Tanja Magoc upset 36th-ranked Kim Niggemeyer in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Fresno State, ranked 38th, improves to 15-7 on the season.
Fresno State faces Tulsa tommorrow at 9 a.m in the second round and UTEP clashes with Hawai'i at 9 a.m. in the consolation round.

Frogs Blank Spartans, 5-0
The top-seeded TCU Horned Frogs took five singles matches as they easily captured a 5-0 victory over the San Jose State Spartans in the first round of the women's WAC Championships.
TCU freshman Dorritt Huppes notched a straight set win over sophomore Anna Nordell, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot.
Huppes improves to 29-6 and 17-3 at the No.2 singles slate. Of Huppes' 29 wins, 26 have come in commanding straight set contests.
The Frogs, ranked 26th, improve to 19-4 and have won 12 of their last 13 dual macthes.

The 75th-ranked SMU Mustangs upset the 61st-ranked Rice Owls, 5-0, in the first round in the women's WAC Championships.
The Mustangs were paced by junior Dee Dee Herring. Herring, ranked 86th in the nation, defeated Rice's Charlotte Feasby in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The Ponies also captured singles matches at the No. 2, 3, 5 and 6 slates to secure the win.
SMU, the fourth seed, improves to 12-10 while Rice, the fifth seed, falls to 12-11 on the season.

Tulsa Knocks Off Hawai'i, 5-1
Second-seeded Tulsa captured five of six singles contests en route to defeating sixth-seeded Hawai'i, 5-1, in the first round of the women's WAC Championships.
Freshman Aleksandra Durska of Tulsa defeated Suzie Saunders of Hawai'i in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. The lone loss for the Golden Hurricane came when sophomore Bianca Posada of Tulsa dropped a straight set match to Hawaii's Nina Wenger, 6-0, 6-3.
Tulsa, ranked 27th in the nation, improves to 19-4 on the season. Tulsa wil go head-to-head with Fresno State tommorrow at 9 a.m. and Hawai'i takes on UTEP at 9 a.m. in the consolation semifinals.

SMU Defeats Hawai'i, 4-0Third-seeded SMU captured the doubles point and won three singles matches in a 4-0 victory against the sixth-seeded Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine.
SMU was led by sophomore Jon Wallmark, ranked 19th in the nation, at the No. 3 singles slate. Wallmark notched a straight set win over Jakob Nilsson of Hawai'i, 6-0, 6-1. In doubles Wallmark and teammate Toby Hansson defeated the Hawai'i tandem of Antonio Garcia and Nilsson, 8-3, at the No. 1 doubles position. Hansson and Wallmark are ranked 15th in the nation in the latest ITA polls.

After dropping the doubles point the Tulsa Golden Hurricane won four singles matches as they defeated the Rice Owls, 4-3, in the first round of the men's WAC Championships.
Fourth seeded Tulsa were led by senior Nead Toroman at the No. 1 singles position. Toroman defeated Rice's Matthias Mathaes in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Tulsa will clash with the top-seeded Horned Frogs tommorrow at 1 pm. in the semifinal round. Rice will face Hawai'i tommorrow at 9 a.m. in the consolation semifinals.
