When the 2025-26 season begins, Xavier Lopez will start his third year as the associate head coach of TCU women's basketball.
Lopez, who goes by Xavi (Cha-vee), has spent 11 straight seasons alongside TCU head coach Mark Campbell, including four straight in an associate head coaching role. He served as Campbell’s associate head coach during their two-year tenure at Sacramento State from 2021-23. Prior to venturing to northern California, Lopez worked in tandem with Campbell for seven seasons at Oregon, the last four as an assistant coach.
Dubbed by Campbell as "the best international recruiter in women's basketball," Lopez chairs the Horned Frogs’ international recruiting efforts and oversees the program’s offensive strategy.
"I am thrilled to have Xavi as my associate head coach," Campbell said. "With an incredible network overseas, he is the best international recruiter in women's basketball. Xavi has an incredible basketball mind that sees the offensive game in a unique way, but more importantly, he is a relationship builder. He is a great mentor to these young women."
TCU (2023-Present)
Lopez has been a lynchpin behind the greatest turnaround in college women's basketball ahead of his third season in Funky Town. His contributions have enabled TCU to boost its combined year-over win differential by and NCAA-leading 26 games since 2023. Just two years removed from an 8-23 season, Lopez helped lead TCU to a 34-4 overall record in 2024-25. Lopez and Campbell won their ninth and 10th conference championships together, sweeping the Big 12 regular season and tournament titles, and notched their fourth shared Elite Eight appearance. TCU earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, marking the program's first berth in the Big Dance in 15 seasons, and became the first Horned Frog men's or women's basketball team to advance to the second weekend.
His deep understanding of the offensive side of the sport is evident in TCU's metrics. With Lopez leading the way, TCU is the only D1 program ranking in the top-10 nationwide in 3-point field goals (3rd, 666), 3-point field goals per game (5th, 9.4) and 3-point percentage (6th, .372) over the last two seasons. The Frogs drained an NCAA-leading 354 threes in 2024-25 while their net total of 666 in Lopez's first two seasons is the most ever by a Big 12 team in a two-year period. TCU's offensive valuations have grown exponentially under Lopez and Campbell. Synergy Basketball graded the Frogs' 2024-25 offense as the third-most efficient in all of D1. Last season also saw TCU score 74 points per game vs. Big 12 opposition after averaging 62.2 in 2023-24. The +11.8 points per game increase in league play was the sixth-largest in all of Division I basketball.
Individually, Lopez has helped recruit and coach five All-Americans, five conference players of the year and five WNBA first round draft picks throughout his coaching career, including Hailey Van Lith, the 2025 Big 12 Player of the Year and a consensus All-American. His recruiting efforts have helped TCU land 18 transfer portal players in the last three cycles, a group that includes Van Lith, fellow all-Big 12 players Madison Conner and Sedona Prince and three-time All-American Olivia Miles among other standouts.
The 2024-25 campaign saw Lopez and TCU shatter nearly every major program record or statistical milestone. The Frogs set TCU basketball records for total wins (34), home wins (21) and ranked wins (nine) and achieved their highest AP Top 25 ranking ever, slotting in at No. 6 in the final poll. TCU broke its 2023-24 program record for 3-pointers (354) and also shattered its previous single-season marks for assists (688), assists per game (18.6) and points scored (2,914) among countless other feats.
Across the college basketball landscape, Lopez influenced one of the nation's most lethal and multi-faceted offenses. TCU finished as one of only three teams ranking in the top 10 in assists (5th, 696) assist-to-turnover ratio (6th, 1.53) and assists per game (8th, 18.6) in all of D1. The Hroned Frogs dished out at least 20 dimes in nearly half of its games (16-of-38). From behind the arc, TCU reached double figures in 3-pointers in 18 games, the second-most of any team, and was the only squad in the NCAA Tournament field boasting five players with at least 40 makes from distance.
Lopez helped coach the nation's third-highest scoring trio in 2024-25 in the form of Van Lith (17.9 ppg), Prince (17.6 ppg) and Conner (14.6 ppg), who netted a combined 50.1 points per game. He helped mentor Van Lith into the first player to win Big 12 Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year accolades in the same season, developed Prince into a Lisa Leslie Award top-five finalist and saw Conner join the duo on the All-Big 12 first team. Van Lith went on to become the fifth WNBA first round draft pick Lopez has worked with, going 11th overall to the Chicago Sky, whole Conner was taken in the third round by the Seattle Storm.
It became evident TCU landed a rising star in the profession just weeks into Lopez's first season at TCU.
Despite touching down in Fort Worth in April 2023 at the apex of recruiting season, Lopez helped assemble the top-ranked transfer class in the Big 12 and No. 11 overall class in the nation in the On3.com team transfer portal index. His recruiting efforts led to TCU landing Prince, Conner and consensus five-star point guard Jaden Owens. Following the conclusion of portal season, Lopez was named one of the nation's "50 Most Impactful High Major Assistants" by Silver Waves Media.
Lopez guided TCU to a 21-12 overall record, season-high AP top-25 ranking of 23rd and a second round appearance in the WBIT in 2023-24. With Lopez aiding the scout for all 33 opponents, TCU enjoyed a record-breaking 14-0 start to the season and produced the largest year-over-year win improvement (13 games) and winning percentage differential (.399) of any Power Six conference program. In total, 11 of the Horned Frogs' 21 victories came at the expense of top-100 teams in the NCAA NET Rankings.
He brought the spread pick-n-roll east from northern California, and the offensive formation paid immediate dividends. TCU averaged 81 points per game, led the nation in 3-point percentage differential (.170) and was third among all D1 programs in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.81) over its first 15 contests.
A rash of midseason injuries prompted open tryouts and forced Lopez to implement an entirely new offense, the 5-out motion. Despite having never previously ran the scheme, Lopez's contributions saw TCU average 10.4 threes per night and join National Champion South Carolina as one of only two teams ranking in the top-25 in 3-point percentage offense and defense over eight games. TCU went on to win five of its final seven ballgames in the regular season, slowly reinstalling the spread pick-n-roll.
With Lopez as TCU's offensive guru, TCU finished the year as one of only two teams to rank in the top-10 nationally in 3-pointers, 3-point percentage and 3-point percentage differential. Lopez also aided TCU in breaking school records for 3-pointers (312) and season assist average (16.7). TCU finished with the third-best 3-pointers per game average (9.5) in Big 12 history. Game-by-game, the Horned Frogs reached double figures in threes 16 times and produced an assist rate of 75 percent-or-better in 13 outings.
Sacramento State (2021-23)
Lopez helped facilitate one of the biggest two-year turnarounds in Division I basketball in his time at Sac State. He and Campbell inherited a program that concluded the 2020-2021 campaign 3-22 overall. With Lopez serving as the Hornets’ top assistant coach, the program enjoyed an 11-game year-over win improvement the following season. Lopez then spearheaded a season of firsts for Sac State in 2022-2023, guiding the Hornets to a school record 25 wins and the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
At Sac State, Lopez again oversaw the spread pick-n-roll, which was one of the nation’s most efficient offenses. Last season, the Hornets led the NCAA in pick-n-rolls and finished 10th nationally in field goal percentage (46.5) and fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (38.5).
Oregon (2015-21)
Lopez played an integral role in leading Oregon to its most successful era on the hardwood. His time on the bench saw the Ducks notch five straight NCAA Tournament appearances, capture three Pac-12 regular season championships and two conference tournament titles and advance to the Final Four in 2019 for the first time in program history.
While in Eugene, Lopez assisted with scouting and recruiting, including leading the Ducks' international recruiting efforts. Under his watch, the Ducks were able to recruit Germany's Satou Sabally, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 WNBA draft, and Spain's Maite Cazorla, the 23rd overall pick in 2019, to the pacific northwest.
Lopez also worked directly with the Oregon guards, overseeing a squad that led the nation in 3-point shooting in 2018-19, hitting 41.5 percent of its 3-point attempts, while ranking fourth in overall shooting at 50.1 percent.
