Horned Frogs fall 4-2 to 32nd-ranked Illini in Urbana
URBANA, Ill. – The Horned Frogs extended spell away from home hit a snag in the Midwest.
No. 6 TCU dropped the doubles point and later squandered a 2-1 lead in an eventual 4-2 defeat to 32nd-ranked Illinois on Saturday at the Atkins Tennis Center.
TCU (8-4) has now lost three consecutive matches for the first time since February of 2020. The Fighting Illini (9-3) picked up their second top-10 win in as many nights, having defeated No. 8 Baylor on Friday.
The Horned Frogs' lone victories came via sweeps from lefties Roger Pascual and Maximus Dussault at the bottom. TCU subsequently dropped courts one, three and four and the match. The Frogs lost the doubles point for the first time in the 2025-26 campaign.
"The Illini, too good for the Frogs tonight," said head coach David Roditi. "Lost the doubles, and they were just better in the bigger points. I want to be pissed off, I want to be disappointed, and I am. At the same time, credit to Illinois. They deserved it. They came through with the shots. They competed really well on those bigger points. They just kept playing consistently.
"I know, we know we have a young team, and we'll learn from this" Roditi continued. "It's high level. Illinois is one of the better teams out there. And when you go on the road and you get down 1-0 in doubles, it makes it a little more difficult. But it's good for us to know that the doubles point is not a given. The first time we lose a doubles point, and we'll learn from that. And all I can say is, awesome, awesome atmosphere. Great job by the Illini to get all these people out here. That's the way it ought to be at all the college matches."
Saturday's loss snapped TCU's seven-match road winning streak dating back to March. The Illini picked up their first victory over the Horned Frogs since the Sweet 16 of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. TCU still leads the all-time series between the pair of national championship programs 11-6.
