Horned Frogs shut out Pioneers 4-0; face Cornell on Saturday
FORT WORTH – Sixth-seeded TCU made quick work of Denver in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, rolling to a 4-0 shutout on Friday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (22-5) locked up the doubles point in short order with a pair of 6-2 decisions on the top courts. Duncan Chan, Oliver Bonding and Roger Pascual then swept courts one, four and six consecutively. TCU dropped just one set all dual vs. the Summit League champion Pioneers (18-6).
Ranked second nationally, the Horned Frogs now face No. 29 Cornell (19-3) at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the round of 32. The Big Red rallied from two points down to defeat Arkansas 4-3 in a first round affair that carried extra weight, as the Razorbacks administration announced its discontinuing its men's and women's tennis programs.
TCU won its 25th consecutive home NCAA Tournament match and improved its all-time record in postseason play on the Bartzen Varsity Courts to 30-1.
TCU has now reached the second round of the Big Dance in 11 straight seasons dating back to 2015.
The Frogs also extended their NCAA-leading home outdoor winning streak to 31 matches with Friday's result.
The victory over the Pioneers boosted TCU head coach David Roditi's career NCAA Tournament record to 36-11.
TCU improved to 3-0 all-time vs. Denver.
Doubles Rundown
First serve was delayed by 45 minutes to a springtime rain sprinkle, but it hardly threw the Horned Frogs out of rhythm.
TCU built 4-1 leads on courts one and two, then secured a double break at both lines to sew up the 1-0 head start.
Albert Pedrico and Cooper Woestendick were first to finish on court two, as they broke Ryoma Mishiro and Samuel Rovai on their first service game and never looked back.
Chan and Rolland De Ravel, the ITA No. 4 ranked doubles tandem, did clinching honors vs. Theo Coats and Connor Robb-Wilcox at the top.
Oliver Bonding and Maximus Dussault left their match vs. Aaron Beduhn and Raffaello Papajcik unfinished at four games all.
TCU picked up its 23rd doubles point on the season and improved to 10-1 in doubles action on the purple courts.
The Frogs are now 23-2 when scoring the first point in a match.
Pedrico and Woestendick, who debuted at No. 42 in the ITA rankings on Thursday, moved to 10-2 as partners. They have won three straight matches in as many starts.
Chan and Rolland De Ravel swelled their shared record to 19-2.
