FORT WORTH – Fueled by 20-kill performances from Becca Kelley and Evan Hendrix, No. 16 TCU volleyball picked up its second win of the weekend on Sunday afternoon, taking down Kansas State 3-1 inside Schollmaier Arena.
Â
The Horned Frogs (17-5, 8-3 Big 12) put together one of their best offensive performances of the season, racking up 56 kills on a .341 hitting percentage. Becca Kelley and Evan Hendrix led the charge with 20 kills apiece. Kelley did her damage on a .405 clip and added six digs and three blocks, while Hendrix hit .400 on 40 swings. The duo combined for 40 of TCU's 56 kills while committing just seven attack errors. Rosemary Archer played a large role in that success, guiding the offense with 32 assists.
Â
Defensively, Alice Volpe anchored the back row with 19 digs, and the Frogs recorded nine total blocks. Kinsley Young led the team with four, while chipping in seven kills, and De'Andrea McMillian added three blocks to go along with four kills on four swings.
Â
TCU got off to a strong start in the opening set. Kelley put away the first point of the afternoon before Gibson added an ace and Hendrix found the floor to help the Frogs quickly build an early 8-3 advantage. Kansas State chipped away and eventually pulled even at 13-all, but TCU never relinquished the lead. A 5-0 scoring run featuring three kills from Hendrix put the Frogs back in control. She slammed the door shut on the set, putting away her seventh kill of the frame to secure the opener for TCU, 25-21.
Â
The Frogs carried that momentum into the second, jumping out to a 6-1 advantage behind Kelley at the service line. Kansas State managed to pull within three at 12-9, but that was as close as the Wildcats would get. Hendrix and Kelley continued to light up the court as TCU pushed the advantage to 21-14. McMillian induced set point before Kelley finished things off with a kill to give the Frogs a 25-17 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
Kansas State flipped the script in the third set and battled to extend the match. Tied at 13-all, a 4-0 Wildcat run gave Kansas State the separation it needed to force a fourth set with a 25-17 set victory of its own.
Â
Battling early in the fourth set, both teams traded points. Four consecutive Kansas State points gave the Wildcats a 10-8 lead before Hendrix sparked a 7-2 run into the media timeout. Leading 15-12, TCU came alive at the net. A pair of errors and blocks helped push the advantage to 20-14. Hendrix and Kelley traded off on the final four kills of the afternoon to finish off the match with a 25-18 set win.
Â
No. 16 TCU gears up for a three-match road swing beginning on Friday, Nov. 6, at Houston at 6:30 p.m. CT.
