Is the first TCU player to win both titles in the same season
SAN FRANCISCO – Duncan Chan delivered TCU's greatest moment at the Battle in the Bay Classic.
Chan swept the singles and doubles championships at the prestigious season-opening invitational, which ran from Thursday-Sunday at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco.
He defeated No. 7 ranked Ozan Baris, the reigning NCAA singles vice champion, 7-5, 6-4 in Sunday's final.
Chan and Cosme Rolland De Ravel cruised to an 8-5 decision over Cal's seventh-ranked tandem of Timofey Stepanov and Tiago Silva earlier in the day to claim the doubles crown.
From Markham, Ontario, Chan became only the third player in tournament history to capture both the singles and doubles titles in the same season. He joined Carl Emil Overbeck (Cal, 2024) and Raymond Sarmiento (USC, 2010) in exclusive company.
Chan is the third Horned Frog to hoist the silver singles chalice. Three-time TCU All-Americans Alex Rybakov and Jake Fearnley won the event in 2018 and 2022.
Chan and Rolland De Ravel gave TCU its first Battle in the Bay Classic doubles title.
The championship exploits were the high-water marks of TCU's weekend stay in the Bay Area. Four Frogs' teamed up for 11 victories across the invitational, all-but-one of which were of the main draw flavor. TCU boarded its flight in possession of a 11-6 combined overall record.
Chan earned his singles championship in full. He defeated four ITA top-100 players and two top-20 doubles tandems on his way to a 9-0 final record. The junior dropped just one set all tournament.
He bounced top-seeded and sixth-ranked Kenta Miyoshi of Illinois, 7-5, 6-4, in Saturday's semifinal to position himself for a battle with Baris.
Sunday's championship was a rematch from last season's Battle in the Bay Classic. Chan faced the Michigan State Spartan Baris in the round of 16. He gave the 2024 preseason ITA No. 1 all he could handle, pushing Baris to the brink in a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3) defeat.
Chan, tabbed No. 106 in the preseason rankings, broke Baris' serve to earn set points in both frames of Sunday's championship.
He took down No. 94 Stian Klaassen (San Diego) and No. 63 Zoran Ludoski in the opening rounds of singles play.
Chan has tallied a team-leading 42 victories in fall invitationals since 2023.
Rolland De Ravel, who transferred to TCU from Old Dominion, is one of the nation's best doubles players. His career doubles winning percentage improved to 85 percent (82-15) following his collaboration with Chan. The French import has competed to a 57-7 mark since 2023.
He and Chan ousted No. 16 Nico Godsick and Hudson Rivera of Stanford, 8-6, in the semifinals and earned an easy 8-4 win at the expense of two-time All-American Sebastian Gorzny to kick off the draw.
Roger Pascual, the ITA No. 88 singles player, earned a hard fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, opening round singles victory over Pepperdine's Aleksa Pisaric.
Freshman Maximus Dussault put a bow on TCU's memorable Sunday by earning his first collegiate victory. The lefty downed the Waves' David Fix in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
TCU now turns its attention to a pair of overlapping events. The Horned Frogs will split their roster evenly between the ITA All-American Championships and Milwaukee Tennis Classic from Sept. 20-28.
