The senior’s performance now puts her third all-time in TCU history for goals
FORT WORTH – The No. 14 TCU women's soccer team, thanks to a two-goal display from Seven Castain, closed out nonconference play with a 2-1 win over Gonzaga on Friday night at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
THE RUNDOWN
The Horned Frogs (6-1) started off in a back-and-forth tilt against Gonzaga, with both teams tallying a few early chances. The Bulldogs put together a nice attack in the opening minutes, but Kira was able to get a hand on one shot and the defense forced another wide to keep the score level. TCU followed with a chance in the 15th minute on a Castain shot off a corner kick that was deflected and kicked around near the goal line and eventually booted away.
TCU would eventually take advantage of its opening in the 26th minute, as Kamdyn Fuller passed to Grace Vest who sent in a ball into the box that was tipped by a Gonzaga defender and sent right to Castain who put it in the back of the net to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead. The squad would take this advantage into the break with hopes to hold onto the lead for the following 45 minutes.
In the second frame, the Frogs led all major offensive statistical categories but were unable to add another goal onto their advantage. TCU had a 7-1 corner advantage, led the shooting battle 12-4 and maintained the majority of the possession. However, the Bulldogs would be the first to strike in the second half, scoring a goal in the 77th minute to equalize the match.
It would be barely over three minutes later when TCU would find its response. AJ Hennessey fed a ball to the right side to Cameron Patton who sent in a cross into the box. Castain, who was sitting unmarked in front of the goal, was able to put a header into the back of the net to give the Frogs all they needed to end the match with a 2-1 victory.
Kira Ybarra played the full 90 minutes in goal, recording two saves in the process.
QUOTE OF THE GAME
On the team heading into Big 12 play looking to defend last year's title…
"We're not defending anything. I don't believe in that. It's a whole new team and a whole new year. We're just trying to go out and win every game and trying to go 1-0 every game. That's not coach speak. That is real for us, and we just want to win the next game. It's going to be hard. We have a target on us, and we have to deal with that and still try to play the best brand of soccer that we can and win soccer games. We expect them (Utah) to come out on Friday with a really good effort and make it really hard for us to win it. That's what we expect."
GAME NOTABLES
TCU will open Big 12 play at home against Utah. That match will take place Friday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
