RALEIGH, N.C. – For the second straight year, and sporting a brand-new team, No. 17 TCU got the better of NC State.
And this time around, the Horned Frogs did it in one of the most hostile environments in college basketball and in an even more decisive manner.
The Horned Frogs defeated No. 10 NC State 69-59 on Sunday at James T. Valvano Arena, snapping the Wolfpack's 24-game home winning streak in the process.
The win signified only the second time TCU has defeated a top-10 team on the road. TCU also earned its first ranked road victory in nonconference play since 2011.
The Horned Frogs improved to 4-0 while the Wolfpack dropped to 2-2.
TCU claimed both matchups in a home-and-home deal between the programs that began on Nov. 17, 2024 in Schollmaier Arena. The Horned Frogs upset then-No. 13 NC State, their first of 10 ranked wins over the last calendar year.
The Frogs bridged a 27-7 run between the second and third quarters to go on top by double digits. TCU rattled off five unanswered to close the period and assumed its largest lead of the afternoon, 56-40, and effectively secured the end result.
Marta Suarez delivered arguably the best game of her five-year college career, leading all scorers with 26 points on 10-18 shooting. Suarez drilled 4-8 looks from distance and played the full 40 minutes. The Spaniard's 26 points were one shy of her career high.
Olivia Miles and Clara Silva each recorded double-doubles. Miles paired 15 points with a career-high 14 rebounds while the 6-7 Silva powered home 12 rebounds and 11 points. Silva's double-double was the first of her career.
Donovyn Hunter gave TCU four double digit scorers, as she tallied 11 points – seven of which came in the second half. Hunter also did yeoman's work on Zoe Brooks, NC State's leading scorer. Brooks entered averaging 17 points per game but Hunter held the 5-10 guard to just six on 2-13 shooting.
TCU held NC State to 33 percent shooting (26-69) and took control of the key in the second half. The Horned Frogs doubled up the Wolfpack in points in the paint, 20-10, and allowed just four offensive rebounds after surrendering 12 in the first half.
The Horned Frogs opened up a 15-5 lead at the 2:00 mark of the first frame behind four points apiece from Suarez and Maddie Scherr. NC State began the game just 2-16 from the floor.
The Wolfpack closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to get within a bucket. NC State later scored nine unanswered to take its first lead of the contest at 24-20 with 5:47 to go in the first half. It marked the first time TCU had trailed all season.
Suarez, though, sparked the turning point in the ballgame. TCU trailed 31-26 at the 3:26 mark of the second quarter but ripped off a 10-0 run behind two 3-pointers from Suarez. She banked in a buzzer-beating three from the right key as time expired to put an exclamation point on the half.
The 6-3 forward netted 15 first half points and struck thrice from distance in the second quarter.
Back-to-back deep balls from Suarez and Hunter lifted TCU to its first double digit lead at 46-36 midway through the third. Five unanswered from Miles swelled the advantage to 51-38 with 3:39 to go. Suarez beat the buzzer once more to close the quarter, threading a layup between two defenders that put the Frogs up 16.
She twice had an answer for NC State in the final period. The Wolfpack halved the deficit over the first 1:50 of the frame, Suarez promptly returned fire with a step through and jumper from the top of the key on consecutive possessions to widen TCU's lead back to a dozen, 60-48, with less than six minutes remaining. She countered an NC State 3-pointer with another midrange jumper at the 3:40 mark that maintained a 12-point Horned Frogs advantage.
TCU held NC State to just one field goal over the final four minutes.
The Horned Frogs outrebounded the Wolfpack 45-41 for the game and 24-18 in the second half.
Both teams finished with 11 assists. Miles led all players with five.
