Frogs Win 4-1
FORT WORTH -- TCU Women's Tennis wins their final home match of the year versus Wichita State in comeback fashion, 4-1.
The Horned Frogs (11-7) rattled off four straight singles victories at the Bartzen Varsity courts on Monday afternoon against the Wushocks (11-9).
TCU got off to a sluggish start in the early doubles portion of the match. Wichita state found success on courts one and two to start the match. Natsumi Kurahashi and Lingwei Kong defeated Tiphanie Lemaitre and Destinee Martins 6-3. The Wushocks took a 1-0 advantage with Kris Kudryavtseva and Jessica Anzo taking down No. Helena Narmont and Yu-Chin Tsai 6-4.
The Horned Frogs shook off their lackluster performance in doubles and shifted their attention to singles play. TCU turned the match around seemingly on a dime with first set wins on all six courts.
The senior captain Mercedes Aristegui struck first with a 6-4, 6-1 straight set win over Anzo. With the match tied, Tsai garnered another victory on court No. 3. The freshman took home a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win. Tsai improves to 2-0 on the season from the No. 3 position.
At the No. 4 court, Martins pushed to a 6-4 first set win over Kudryavteva. The junior fell behind 0-4 in the second set, but she rallied to take the second set and the match 7-5. With TCU up 3-1, Lemaitre gave her team the win. On the first court, the transfer senior took a tiebreak win in the first set 7-6. She buried her opponent sweeping the second set to give TCU their 11th win on the season.
Head coach Lee Taylor Walker spoke on his team's resilience over the last two matches.
"Back-to-back matches where we've lost the doubles point and had the resolve to get it done in singles. Very proud of the team. I thought Hels, Jade and Denny showed some real fight and poise coming back from being down in some of their sets. And I thought Mer, Tiph and Yuki played with great intention in some of their sets- extending leads with positive confident aggressive tennis. The team is fired up for this weekend and we are clicking at the right time."
