
TCU Battles Past West Virginia

Horned Frogs win their Big 12 home opener, 4-2
FORT WORTH – TCU women's tennis (10-8) collected its second straight Big 12 victory on Friday afternoon, defeating West Virginia, 4-2, in the Big 12 home opener at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. TCU won a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles to win the doubles point before winning three straight sets singles matches to clinch the win.
Jade Otway and Mercedes Aristegui delivered 2-0 days today. For Otway, it was her team-leading fifth perfect day. The Freshman leads the team with 15 overall victories this season. Aristegui posted her second 2-0 day of the season.
TCU won its first doubles point of conference play, getting wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 pairs in an interesting doubles competition. Aristegui and Isabel Pascual worked quickly on court two, winning 6-3 for the first result of the day. Shortly after, WVU took the match on court one, setting up a winner take all match at No. 3, where Otway and Stevie Kennedy were down a break, 3-5. The Frogs battled back, getting their match back on serve, 5-5, before winning the tiebreaker, 7-5, to clinch the doubles point in a thrilling conclusion.
In singles play, the first sets were all hotly contested, with five of the six matches reaching scores of 4-5 or 5-4. The one that didn't come down to the wire was at No. 1, where Alisa Soloveva delivered a 6-3 first set victory. By the end of the first sets, TCU had won four tight battles, with Otway, Kennedy and Aristegui joining Soloveva.
The second sets were much more pronounced, with four of the five completed sets being decided by four or more games. Otway found her form in the second set, dominating play to the tune of a 6-4, 6-1 victory. WVU cut the lead to 2-1 with a win on court five just before Soloveva put the finishing touches on her 6-3, 6-2 victory on one. With a 3-1 lead, it was Mercedes Aristegui, clinching the match with a dominant 6-1 second set, giving TCU the victory just a few seconds after WVU got a second point on court 4.
