TCU sets a program record with its fifth consecutive sweep on the purple courts
FORT WORTH -- TCU women's tennis (5-1) made history on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping Houston (1-2) 4-0 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Horned Frogs have now swept five straight opponents at home, the longest streak in the program's 50-year history. TCU took care of business thanks to a pair of 2-0 days from graduate senior Alisa Soloveva and freshman Jade Otway.
"Big doubles point for us today," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "We need to keep improving our doubles for sure, but it was great to get that point against a feisty Houston team. I think that allowed everyone to settle in more confidently. Jade keeps taking care of business and it's nice to have someone with her competitive intangibles down there dominating. It's not easy to do and she's off to a great start on the season. I thought Aleksa played a very composed smart match. Everyone knows she's got the shots. But what makes her great is her ability to navigate the match with all her tools and manage the various situations that arise in tennis. She's got a high tennis IQ and must continue to rely on her mental strength to play her best. After watching Alisa in her epic battle in Wisconsin, I have the utmost confidence in her. She just makes you earn every single thing, every point, and I don't see anyone being able to match that toughness. Our schedule is going to keep progressing and we need clean up some things. We need every player confident in their ability to manage the momentum swings of matches and that takes learning from match to match and sharpening tools between match days. The team is coming together and we are in a good spot"
TCU won the doubles point at No. 2 and No. 3. After Houston had won the match on court one, Isabel Pascual and Addy Guevara tied things up on three. The pair stayed perfect on the season (3-0), delivering an early break and holding serve for a 6-3 win, setting up a winner-take-all match at No. 2, where Otway and Soloveva were tied, 5-5. The pairing quickly won a break and held serve for the 7-5 win, clinching the doubles point for the Frogs.
In singles play, Otway made quick work of her match, playing at No. 6. The freshman dominated (6-2, 6-1), earning TCU a quick point to go in front, 2-0. It was the latest in a string of wins for Otway, who has not lost a singles set all season (10-0) and has won both doubles and singles matches in three of TCU's six duals thus far.
Soloveva earned her third win of the season at the No. 1 spot, doing so in straight sets. She had to battle in her second set, overcoming a 1-3 deficit to win five of the next six games and earn the point for TCU, 6-3, 6-4. Soloveva has been perfect for TCU this season, winning all six of her completed matches in both singles and doubles.
Aleksa Cveticanin clinched the sweep at No. 4, with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. The senior from Australia was overpowering in her opening set and showcased her abilities to win long rallies in the second, grinding out a 6-3 set. Cveticanin improves to 2-1 in singles and 7-3 overall this year.
All eight Horned Frogs on the active roster have contributed wins throughout TCU's five match home sweep streak, the longest in program history. Otway leads the team with seven overall wins (doubles + singles).
