Frogs shoot top score in the nation this season
FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 6 TCU Horned Frogs shot the top aggregate score in the NCAA this season in route to a dominating 4,719-4,643 victory over No. 11 Ohio State on Sunday.
The Frogs picked up their second conference win of the weekend (3-0) in record-setting fashion. Their team score of 4,719 is the eighth best in program history. TCU posted a season-best score of 2,334 in smallbore to go along a with a program record of 2,385 in air rifle. This is the second time that the Frogs have broken the air rifle record this season.
TCU turned in the top six aggregate scores in the match. Junior Casey Lutz led the field, tying her career-high score of 1,183 from last season. Freshmen Kristen Hemphill and Angeline Henry both fired new career-high marks of 1,178 and 1,177, respectively. Elizabeth Marsh finished with a score of 1,177 to tie for third. Rachel Garner placed fifth with a solid score of 1,175, while Abby Gordon rounded out the top six with a career-best 1,174. Ohio State was paced by Rhiann Travis with a mark of 1,171.
The Frogs put together a very nice smallbore performance. Of the eight who competed, six finished with scores of 580 or better. Lutz fired a season-high mark of 586, good for tops in the match. Marsh and Garner both followed, shooting scores of 583. Hemphill turned in the fourth best score with a 582. Not factoring into the team score, Gordon (581) and Catherine Miller (580) tied their career-high marks.
In air rifle, TCU dominated the field with the top six performers. Freshman Angeline Henry shot a career-high 598 to lead the Frogs. Her mark is tied for the 13th best in program history. Lutz continued her impressive streak, firing a 597 for the third straight match. Hemphill followed shooting a strong score of 596. Henry, Lutz, and Hemphill all combined to shoot 12 perfect strings of 10 (four each). Marsh and Garner rounded out scoring for the counters with a 594 and 592, respectively. Not factoring into the team score, freshman Taylor Haffner finished with a career-high mark of 587.
Ohio State shot a 2,306 in smallbore and 2,337 in air rifle (4,643 aggregate). The Buckeyes were paced in both disciplines by Travis with a 582 in smallbore and a 589 in air rifle.
TCU will compete at the USA Shooting Winter Air Gun Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1
