Frogs look to close out fall season strong
FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 1 ranked TCU Horned Frogs hit the road to close out their fall season with a match-up in Colorado Springs, Colo. The top ranked rifle squad in the country is set to shoot against No. 6 Air Force, No. 14 Ohio State and No. 25 Georgia Southern.
The Frogs are coming off a season-best performance. Two weeks ago they defeated Ohio State 4,719-4,643 while shooting the eighth-highest aggregate score in school history. They also set the program air rifle record for the second time this season with a mark of 2,385. Meanwhile, the Falcons posted a 4,674 in their last outing against UTEP. Georgia Southern hasn't competed in a match since their 4,667-4,488 loss to Morehead St. on Nov. 10.
TCU boasts the second-best average aggregate score in the NCAA with a 4,699. In smallbore, the Frogs sit in fourth nationally averaging a 2,324.7 while the Falcons rank second. All season long, TCU has dominated the air rifle field. They top the rankings with a 2,374.3 average.
Individually, three of the top 10 performers in the country are Horned Frogs. Senior Rachel Garner has averaged an aggregate score of 1,180.1 so far this season, the second-best mark in the NCAA. Junior Casey Lutz owns the eighth-best average with a score of 1,174.5 and sophomore Elizabeth Marsh rounds out the top 10 averaging a 1,174.1.
In smallbore, two Frogs rank in the top six. Garner, fifth nationally, is averaging a score of 584.9. Marsh follows her with a mark of 583.3. Air Force is paced by Anna Weilbacher who owns the seventh-best average of 583.2, while Ohio State is led by Rhiann Travis (581.4).
TCU has resembled an air rifle powerhouse this season with four of the top 15 performers in the NCAA. Lutz leads the Frogs and sits in third with a mark of 596.1. She has fired a score of 597 in her last three matches entering the weekend and has posted a 595 or better in seven of her eight outings this season.
Garner owns the fifth best average, a 595.3. Freshmen Angeline Henry (12th) and Kristen Hemphill (15th) have both performed extremely well for TCU, averaging scores of 592.1 and 591.8, respectively. Georgia Southern is paced by Rosemary Kramer with an average of 593.6 while Peter Fiori is the top performer from Air Force with a 592.3 average.
Prior to its match, TCU will participate in U.S.A. Shooting's Winter Airgun Championships on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
